Pay Attention
In my experience addressing leaders, some audiences make you search a little harder for the right words.
This was one of them.
I had the special opportunity to spend an afternoon with students with disabilities at @Makerere.
As I prepared, I thought about myself at their age. I remembered how much I was looking for answers. How I lapped up nuggets of wisdom from adults. A word here. A piece of advice there. Anything that might help me find my way.
I wrestled with the question: what could I share that might be useful to these young people as they navigate university, leadership and life?
I chose spoke about mentorship, networking and open doors.
Looking back on my life, many people opened doors for me. Not necessarily through jobs or grand introductions. Sometimes it was advice. A word in season. Someone pointing me in a direction I needed to take. Other times, I simply watched how they led and learnt.
My biggest message to the students?
Pay attention.
Listen. Ask questions. Observe the people around you.
And don’t take your peers for granted. The person sitting next to you today is part of the network you are building for tomorrow.
This is something our work with leaders reminds me of again and again: wisdom is everywhere, if we learn to notice it.
At their age, I was looking for answers too.
Some of them were sitting right beside me.

I See You
Today is our 9th birthday! 🎉
As @CivsourceAfrica turns 9, I wanted to mark the moment in a way that was simple, meaningful and memorable.
So, I wrote letters to nine leaders.
These nine years of CivSource have also been nine years of leadership for me. Nine years of wins and mistakes. Of learning and unlearning. Of understanding leadership differently.
And one thing I know now: leaders need to be seen too.
We see what they build. We see what they achieve. We see the milestones.
But do we see them?
The doubts. The difficult decisions. The sacrifices. What it takes to keep showing up.
So I wanted to tell these leaders what I see:
I see your courage.
I see what you are building.
I see the people you are lifting.
I see your sacrifice.
I see you.
Some have helped build CivSource. Some are building organizations and communities I admire. Some have unknowingly taught me how to keep going.
It reminded me that part of leadership is noticing other leaders while they are still in the middle of the work.
Leadership asks a lot from people.
A little encouragement along the way costs us almost nothing.
But it may arrive on the very day someone needs it most.
