In 1996, a 3-year-old child fell nearly 20 feet into the gorilla pit at Chicago's Brookfield Zoo. As the crowd screamed in panic, an 8-year-old gorilla named Binti approached. She gently held the child in her arms and protected the little one by keeping the other gorillas away. Then, she slowly carried the child to safety.
