Had a great day learning about the science of reading during LETRS training today. Our brains are amazing!! Excited to help students and teachers with what I learned!
Some adults in school are good at pouring gasoline on a tiny fire. Not saying kid isn’t at fault, rude, disrespectful, etc... Simply asking do you pour water or gasoline? The goal is to defuse every time. #thatonekid
The real secret to effective management in the classroom is creating personal relationships with each student. Listen to students, understand their situation, and make decisions based on their perspective. It’s the key to preventing #ThatOneKid from disrupting learning.
Five of my fave relationship building tips:
1. Be there when things are bad.
2. Criticize & praise as privately as possible.
3. Be respectful to disrespectful people.
4. Remember to much criticism w/out praise is abuse.
5. Ask lots of questions.

While the principal is the thermostat, the culture of a school is created by everyone in the school. Walk in a school and see how the front office staff talks and interacts or the staff /teachers in the hallway. Everyone is ultimately responsible for a positive school culture.
“However you respond to someone when they make a mistake is how they respond when you make a mistake. What do I want when I make a mistake? Grace and understanding.” -@gerrybrooksprin
Many adults still need help with these things. Let’s not assume kids can do anything of these without consistent routines, structures, reminders, and grace!
