For all the fuss about this being a woke movie, it borrows its moral weight from conservative wisdom and Christian ideas. Hollywood, when it wants to tell a good story rather than peddle its ideology, often leans on conservative sentiments and Christian themes.

Nolan, who was raised Catholic, is in this way like the Greeks of his Odyssey. In fact, all of Hollywood is, and so is much of our culture. Nolan didn’t merely adapt the Odyssey for our age, he made a movie indicting even himself.

We have spent a couple of generations at least spending down the cultural wealth of Western civilization. We have wandered so far, and God only knows if we can ever go back home.

Nolan's Odyssey could have been better, yes.

But if your criticisms are preventing people from simply enjoying a potent Return of the King story, you are a part of the "far greater threat to our culture" that Lewis warned about.

Our criticism should serve the enjoyment of a good story, not hinder it.

Those of you who cannot fathom that Christopher Nolan is using trickery and a Trojan Horse approach to The Odyssey have already forgotten that Nolan made the Prestige which is all about hiding the truth in layers of deception. He made Inception which was about getting past someone’s psychological barriers to plant an idea in their unconscious. He made The Dark Knight in which Batman pretends to be a vilain so that the city can be preserved. He made Memento in which a man tricks himself into believing something.

There is nothing straightforward about Nolan’s Odyssey.

@TolkienWonder It's a fantastic re-telling of the story. The original story is from before Christianity, but there is so much Christian symbolism in that movie. I especially noticed on the 2nd viewing. Baptism, confession, and the traditional deep love of marriage.
