Shyness is not pleasant to experience, but it's an evolutionary strategy that confers benefits, which is why it exists still, in all species - including humans.

In humans, the shyness itself is not usually the benefit (many experience it as a curse), but rather the other traits that tend to accompany it -- e.g., a strong conscience; responsiveness to subtlety, nuance and threat; sensitivity that can be manifested via creativity, a talent for friendship and connection, and appreciation of beauty and excellence.

Many humans outgrow childhood shyness but still retain a core of it within. Does this describe you or someone you know?
