"The effect of constant change without fundamental review and reform … makes elections harder than ever to deliver to the standard voters rightly expect."
We have written to the Deputy Prime Minister following the 2 May and 4 July elections https://t.co/fMsphmYSsl
We'd like to clarify that if a postal voter doesn’t receive their ballot pack, the law prevents a Returning Officer offering any alternative ways for them to vote.
However, the RO can issue a replacement pack up until 5pm on polling day.
An emergency proxy cannot be granted.
We agree with @JohnRentoul - electoral reform is long overdue. The current system only works due to the dedication of those administering it.
On the point of a shorter timetable, it would risk disenfranchising voters. Parliament decided 25 days is appropriate as recently as 2021
Since #GE24 was announced, over 1.6m applications in total have been made to register to vote, for postal and proxy votes, and free #VoterID.
We remain worried about the burden on Electoral Registration Officers & their teams, with new processes and duplicates adding pressure.
Finished! 4,518 candidates have been nominated to stand in the 2024 UK general election. This is the most candidates ever, beating the previous record of 4,150, in 2010.

From 862 applications over three days, to 12,713 - a 1,375% increase. That's the initial impact of changes to voter rights for British citizens living overseas.
We've produced a range of support guidance, templates and checklists to help our members deal with this change 1/3
“Another major, relatively untested, change, implemented without important functionality and against the advice of the electoral sector, is being introduced.”

🧵Our @AEA_ChiefExec has released the following after confirmation Online Absent Vote Applications will launch from 31 Oct 2023.
OAVA will apply to all polls in England (except Parish Polls), UK Parliamentary and PCC elections in Wales, and UK Parliamentary elections in Scotland
Lots of interesting stuff in here, including worries about failures in the postal system potentially preventing some of the increasingly large number of people who vote that way actually doing so.
If you've not seen it: important warning from the trade association for electoral officials: they say next general election could face significant problems due to mass of changes, including voter ID, added to an already "creaking" system.

Our elected officers outline the ten major recommendations below.
Our close of polls statement 🧵
The initial picture is that polling day has run as smoothly as usual, without any major issues. This is testament to months of planning and hard work from Returning Officers and electoral administrators. #LE23

🧵 The Local Government Association is correct to say the practical difficulties around implementing voter ID should not be underestimated.
No Returning Officer or electoral administrator wants to see any elector disenfranchised at any election.

We’re glad to see #VoterID highlighted on @GMB this morning. Photo ID will be required to vote at polling stations on 4 May.
Anyone who does not have photo ID can get one for free either online or by contacting their council: https://t.co/hJnsVjabYE #LE23#LocalGov
