As leaders, we are told to "start with why" because purpose is critical: if we create & commit to a profound purpose, a whole host of engagement, performance & outcome benefits will result.
However, purpose isn't enough. People constantly engage in meaning-making at work & purpose is only part of that. People also need:
1) Coherence: a sense that things fit together, systems & processes work, the strategy makes sense & change is managed well.
2) Significance: experiences that require mastery & promote the joy of accomplishment.
3) Mattering: belief & understanding that the things we do are relevant to something bigger, beyond our personal desires.
No single person can decide what the ideal combination of these factors should be that will appeal to a diverse workforce. For people to be dedicated to collective purpose requires dialogue, evolution & shared meaning-making:

I've been coaching masters students in quality improvement at Jonkoping University, Sweden this afternoon. What a joy. They're each preparing to make an oral poster presentation on their change projects, in English. I was asked to give them advice on how to prepare for their presentations & this is still my favourite piece. "How to Rehearse for an Important Presentation":

We want people to experiment & learn in their own work environment. At the heart of this is a key question: "Is it safe to try?". Meaning: is it safe to try out this change, to learn if it works, get some data & come back for another decision if we need to? Ignore the 50 reasons why we can't implement this yet: https://t.co/arKYbud8ZH By @jurriaankamer
@HelenBevan@NENC_NHS Thankyou a beautiful summary of what we should all be striving to achieve - we’re just across the Border and would love to collaborate 💕

I started my #NHS journey as a receptionist. I felt invisible, I had ideas but nowhere to voice them. I knew everyone, saw everything & was yearning to do more. I often felt forgotten or dismissed. A receptionist is more than answering the phone e & booking appointments
