Final FSP field trip! @Classics22FSP spent our last class at the Centrale Montemartini, a former power plant, now home to an impressive collection of antiquities. Students delivered reports on objects relevant to other sites they visited in in #Greece & #Italy

Last but not least! Gerol, Cassidy, and Ben presented on this statue, often identified as Venus Genetrix. The statue harkens back to carving styles seen on late 5th century BCE monuments and was used in conjunction with Imperial imagery in the 1st + 2nd cents CE incl coinage.

Arch Day!
Thanks to @Classics22FSP students Rahul & Gabe for their presentation on the fascinating Arch of Constantine, located next to the Colosseum! The group then compared the monument with its predecessor, the early 3rd cent arch of Septimius Severus in the #Roman Forum!

Return to the #Roman Forum! @Classics22FSP professors led the group through the Atrium Vestae, Arch of Titus, and Basilica of Maxentius, where students were introduced to the #archaeology of cult ritual, triumphal procession, & late imperial architecture.

in the afternoon, @dartmouth students experienced a different kind of #villa: the amazing Renaissance & Baroque @villadestepark, ft hundreds of fountains designed by the likes of Ligorio & Bernini (+ a water organ that plays at 2:30!), all powered by gravity-fall #fountains!

1 daytrip, 2 amazing villas! ⛲🏛️⛲
Yesterday, @Classics22FSP headed east to #Tivoli for our last #archaeology excursion outside of #Rome. Adam + Isabella showed us around #Hadrian's enormous #villa complex, presenting on the 'Maritime Theater' & the #Egyptian-style 'Canopus.'

Student-led tour of the massive Baths of Caracalla, built in the early 3rd century CE. This multiuse space housed gyms, a swimming pool, ca 11k lockers, + libraries in addition to the famous baths. Thanks for showing us around, Ben & Lily!

@Classics22FSP students split into groups to study the Ara Pacis and then presented different aspects of the ancient monument to their classmates, including panels depicting processions, mythological scenes, & intricate floral motifs 🌿

For #InternationalMuseumDay, @Classics22FSP visited @MANNapoli, where they saw some of the best preserved ancient #Roman copies of famous #Greek artworks. This includes the Tyrranicides, or 'tyrant slayers,' a monument once displayed in the Agora of #Athens!

Pompeian Presentations Day II: bread & Circuses! 🥖🌋🗡️
@Classics22FSP students led their classmates through the Amphitheater -a site of bloody #gladiator matches- and the bakeries of #Pompeii. The group then stopped at the famous Villa of the Mysteries en route to #Herculaneum!

Pompeian Presentations! 🌋 @Classics22FSP students kicked off their 1st day at the ancient city with reports on #textile production at the building of Eumachia & #Roman water systems + infrastructure at the fountains and water towers near the Castellum Aquae.
