My heart goes out to your brother, but he did the only thing he could do to save his dignity and sanity.
The bible clearly states that when people marry, they cleave to each other and leave their families.
Your spouse comes first. Respect your family or theirs, help in moderation when needed, but never allow them to take over.
If his wife truly loves him, then she will wake up and correct the situation; otherwise, he has a choice.
Stay and be her family's doormat, or leave and build an individual life.
Maybe going to marriage counseling will allow him to voice his frustrations and help his wife realize her mistake in choosing her family over her husband.
Either way, I don't think he should return to her and the house until she agrees to his demands.
