@stewartwaine Yes, we also have a couple of accessions from DEFRA. Did you know that their Ribes collection has been eliminated a few years ago and most accessions are lost on institutional level? Shows the importance of private collections like yours!

@stewartwaine Hm, 'Jacob' is an unknown varietal name to me. Yes, for Ribes it's in average even 3 out of 10 that are mixed up, including newer selections from the 20th century. It can happen in nurseries and collections and most of the time no one realizes when something went wrong.

@stewartwaine That's good to hear! We also had almost all our Rubus and Ribes accessions tested. But there still always is the question of reference, at least for old varietal names. Which instance or collection was the Rubus-Reference in your case?

@stewartwaine Also, there have been different varieties been brought out under the name of 'Achilles'. And from our research, historical mix-ups and nomenclatural ambiguity are quite widespread in old Ribes cultivars.

@stewartwaine Yes unfortunately there is a bad mix-up, especially for older varieties. Our numbers are much worse, with 1/3 of all Ribes accessions with known cultivar names being provably wrong. Inventarised over 25 years from gene banks, nurseries and private collections.

@stewartwaine Impressive, that's the biggest private collection I know of! As the book has not been published in English, there is no distributor in the UK. But I can send you a copy if you like. We are still looking for true-to-type accessions of some old english cultivars of Ribes and Rubus.
