I worked with multiple indie game devs and I saw this pattern; first they start with a hobby small project and after that, the second project will be a more serious one. So basically they learned the pipeline, posting a game on steam / google play/ apple store, learned to use a game engine, and after this launch, with all the knowledge behind, they start a bigger one.
