My husband and I have paid into the system for decades too. Still paying. We’re the ones who are always a dollar short or a day shy — not poor enough for the special programs, not rich enough for the loopholes. Just the middle that funds everything and gets the leftovers.
A $10 OAS raise while we waited 19 months to get into a cancer clinic. While our nine grandchildren send out hundreds of résumés and can’t land entry-level work. While housing, groceries, and basic services keep getting harder for the people who built and paid for this country. Meanwhile the temporary residents and new arrivals get the bridging supports, faster access, and priority that multi-generational taxpayers cannot.
They teach the younger generations and recent arrivals to see people like us — white, older, legacy Canadians who stayed and raised families — as the problem. It doesn’t matter that we worked, paid taxes, raised kids (sometimes alone), and expected nothing more than a decent doctor, a roof, and a chance for the next generation. None of that counts anymore. We’re expected to kneel and say thank you for the crumbs.
I wanted my grandchildren to inherit the Canada I thought I grew up in. That country is gone under these policies. Results, not spin. Canadians first. The people who built this country are done waiting.
