Americans for a Clean Energy Grid

A broad coalition of business, labor, consumer & environmental groups working to expand and modernize America's grid — for reliability and affordability.

New @rff modeling of the bipartisan permitting bill:

➡️ ~30% more transmission capacity by 2041
➡️ Lines connecting regions more than double
➡️ $350B+ in power system savings through 2050

The results held in every scenario RFF ran.

SunZia was proposed in 2006 and came online this year, now carrying power 550 miles to over a million homes in Arizona and California. @voxdotcom on why it took 20 years, and why, with demand climbing fast, the next lines can’t wait that long.

@ColumbiaUEnergy analysis: transmission gains the most of any project type under the bipartisan Senate permitting bill, with 5+ years cut from federal review for a representative line.

More reliable, affordable power, sooner. Congress should pass it.

@SPPorg stakeholders endorsed a $23.7B transmission plan projected to return $3+ for every $1 through stronger reliability, less congestion, and lower energy costs.

The most affordable grid is the one we build now.

America can’t compete if it can’t build the grid. Former officials from both parties, Yellen to Pompeo, agree. Interregional transmission planning and a stronger federal backstop are where to start. Congress should pass the bipartisan permitting bill.

7/Transmission people tell me this is some of the best language we've ever seen, better than they expected. Interregional AND regional planning, and a backstop process that actually works, with clear, uniform rules on cost allocation.

What it would do for the grid:

➡️ Planning across regions
➡️ Costs that follow benefits
➡️ A clearer path to siting major interstate lines
➡️ More out of the lines we already have
➡️ Protections for households as demand grows

The Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act, introduced today by @SenCapito, @SenWhitehouse, @SenMikeLee and @SenatorHeinrich, includes some of the most significant grid reforms in decades. Congress should finish the job this year.

The North Plains Connector's federal environmental review took under two years. The average federal environmental review takes four and a half.

A first-of-its-kind link between the Eastern and Western grids, moving at a pace that should be normal.

New @SPGlobal analysis for Electricity Customer Alliance: expanding transmission pays for itself in every scenario modeled — and interregional lines deliver 2-3x the value of building locally only.

$8.4B in value left on the table if we stay constrained.

A lot is happening in transmission right now — at FERC, in the RTOs, on the Hill, and in the states.

New from @ClearPathAction: building new transmission is essential to serving demand growth — new pathways, resources unlocked, reliability held. Reconductoring adds near-term capacity alongside it.

All of it: 7–8% of total system investment.

"Transmission is synonymous with headroom."

Much of the grid is running close to full, and tight supply means higher prices. More transmission, more room, lower bills.

State regulators are pointing to interregional HVDC transmission as a resource adequacy solution.

@NARUC's board adopted a resolution on 7/22 encouraging RTOs, utilities, and federal policymakers to weigh interregional HVDC in resource planning.

As electricity demand climbs and bills become a top-of-mind concern for families, the fix isn't picking winners between energy sources, it's building the grid to move all-of-the-above American energy where it's needed.

New research from @CleanEnergyGrid backs this up: polling across the political spectrum shows that transmission investment is key to reliability and affordability, so long as the costs land on the large users driving new demand, not on everyday ratepayers.

Our country needs an affordable, reliable grid that meets rising demand without sticking families with the bill. Read more: https://t.co/Y4nrTUwzx9

Recent polling: 92% of Americans want the grid modernized (@ConsEnergyNet) — but only ~1 in 3 believe it'll lower their bills. Closing that gap is the affordability case still to be made. Here's what's breaking through on transmission:

From @ENERGY's new draft National Transmission Needs Study:

"The nation's energy dominance hinges on a robust transmission system…"

Same bottom line as the prior admin's study: transmission — especially interregional — is a bipartisan priority.
