A major leap for commercial fusion: China has unveiled the blueprint for its next-generation HL-4 tokamak, engineered to break the continuous-operation bottleneck. 🇨🇳⚛️
Currently under construction in Shanghai, this facility will be the world’s first high-temperature superconducting (HTS), steady-state burning fusion platform. By moving away from conventional copper coils to 25-tesla HTS magnets, HL-4 drastically shrinks the reactor footprint while enabling the continuous, superheated plasma operation that previous iterations couldn't sustain.
While not a commercial reactor itself, this facility serves as the critical engineering validation step before moving to a grid-scale demonstration unit. The timeline for fusion commercialization is accelerating rapidly.

Fusion's future comes down to one question. Can it beat the experience curve.
Solar and wind got cheap because we built them at scale. Every doubling of production dropped costs by 20 to 30 percent. Fusion does not work that way. Plants are large, complex, and custom built. A 2026 study in Nature Energy found technologies with those traits achieve cost declines of only 2 to 8 percent per doubling.
That means fusion could get built and still never get cheap.
The counterargument is that fusion does not need to be cheapest. It needs to be firm. Data centres, industrial heat, desalination, and remote grids will pay a premium for power that never stops and never emits. That is a real market. It is just not the same market solar won.
So the future of fusion is probably not "too cheap to meter." It is "expensive but irreplaceable."
The next five years decide which one it becomes.

Fusion has raised $14.24 billion. Zero watts delivered to a grid. Guess which number grows faster.
Drop your answer below. Then read the rest.
The money is real. Commonwealth Fusion Systems has $4 billion and a reactor 75% built. Helion is valued at $15.5 billion. Microsoft signed a power purchase agreement. Google and Eni signed PPAs for a plant that does not exist yet.
Now the hard part. No fusion device has ever produced net electricity. JET's best shot made 11.6 megawatts of fusion power while drawing roughly 500 megawatts. A peer-reviewed study in Nature Energy concluded fusion is unlikely to become competitive with other clean energy sources even in the long term.
So here is the question for you. Is fusion a capital markets story or an engineering story. And which one wins in the next five years.
Reply with your take.

Fusion just raised $4.48 billion in one year. That's a record. Total private capital now sits at $14.24 billion .
The money is real. But nobody has produced a single watt of net electricity from fusion yet.
That's the business case in one sentence.
Commonwealth Fusion Systems alone has raised $4 billion. Their SPARC reactor is 75% built. They've already signed Google and Eni to buy power from a plant that doesn't exist .
Helion is valued at $15.5 billion. Microsoft signed a PPA. OpenAI is negotiating for 5 gigawatts .
General Fusion just signed a framework with Italy's Renexia. Site evaluation starts now .
Every major fusion company says grid power by the 2030s. That's the promise. The physics hasn't delivered breakeven yet.

The US and UK just linked their fusion supercomputers. Not a research paper. A deal.
UKAEA + Princeton PPPL will now train the same AI models on data from two different fusion machines. Two compact spherical tokamaks. One on each side of the Atlantic.
The point: learn faster. Build digital twins. Feed it into STEP and STAR.
"No single lab or nation will design it alone."
And that's just one of three deals this week. Birmingham + EPRI launched FURESHMA on shielding materials. Tennessee + TVA + UK deepened their partnership on supply chains, tritium, and regulation.
Three deals. One week. Fusion is leaving the lab.

THE TAKEAWAY:
The fusion race isn't about making an "artificial Sun" hotter.
It's about learning to control star-like plasma on Earth.
China leads on duration. India is upgrading its toolkit. The goal is the same — and the prize is limitless clean energy.

🇨🇳 vs 🇮🇳 THE FUSION RACE: WHO'S WINNING?
China's EAST vs India's SST-1 — two "artificial Suns" chasing the same dream. One has the edge. The other just got a major upgrade.
THE SCORECARD:
🇨🇳 EAST → stronger record in long-duration plasma experiments
🇮🇳 SST-1 → strengthening heating capability + research infrastructure
Neither is designed to produce commercial electricity today. Both are research machines.
⚡ FUSION'S $14 BILLION BUSINESS CASE
Fusion has raised $14.24B in private capital — a record $4.48B in the last year alone. 17 startups have raised $100M+ each. Commonwealth Fusion Systems alone: $4B total. Proxima Fusion: $470M, valued at $2.7B. Helion: valued at $15.5B.
The money isn't just VC anymore — pension funds, sovereign wealth funds, and industrial giants like Hyundai are in.
And customers are already signing. Google & Eni have PPAs for over half the output of CFS's planned 400 MW ARC plant in Virginia. Microsoft has a PPA with Helion. These plants don't exist yet — and their power is already sold.
Timelines are getting specific too: CFS targets grid power in the early 2030s, Helion says 2028, Proxima by the early 2030s.
But here's the bear case. A 2026 Nature Energy study concluded fusion is "unlikely to become competitive" with other clean energy sources — even long-term. First-of-a-kind costs range from $1,400 to $43,000 per kW. At historical experience rates of 2–8%, costs don't fall fast enough. And the physics: JET's best shot produced 11.6 MW of fusion power while drawing ~500 MW — a 70× shortfall. Tritium is scarce, and 14-MeV neutrons degrade materials.
The verdict: the capital markets case is real. The engineering case is unproven. No fusion device has produced net electricity. The next 5 years decide which case wins.
