It was an honour to present our work on #microplastics in rivers to @APPGPlastics in Westminster last week chaired by @AlbertoCostaMP with representatives from @WomensInstitute & various organisations. Excellent discussion on how to limit microplastics entering the environment.
This week, @AlbertoCostaMP corralled cross-Political party support to call on the Sec of State for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs to support the Microplastic Filters (Washing Machines) Bill. It was co-signed by Jeryl Stone, our Chair. Find out more in the link in our bio.
This week I wrote to the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in a letter co-signed by 38 cross-party parliamentarians expressing support for my Bill which would have microplastic filters fitted on all new washing machines.

PFAS and microplastics become more toxic when combined, research shows
Few human-made substances are as individually ubiquitous and dangerous as PFAS and microplastics, and when they join forces there is a synergistic effect that makes them even more toxic and pernicious, new research suggests.

#Microplastic pollution is impacting Britain’s rivers, seas and food supplies—as well as our own bodies—but a fibre capture filter on washing machines could cut the amount of fibres in the environment by 87%. #EndPlasticSoup 👕 @_RobbieMoore
Thank you for the support Ben & a massive thank you to @WomensInstitute & @AlbertoCostaMP for your determination to tackle microfibre pollution. Here’s to the 200,000 WI members who voted for this action & to the cross party MPs supporting @APPGPlastics and this important bill
And if you are in any doubt that microplastics are a major problem, here's one example of an alarming study showing that "brain samples, which were collected in early 2024, measured on average about 0.5% plastic by weight."

I am pleased to be presenting a Bill in Parliament today calling for all new washing machines to be fitted with microplastics filters.
Will it make any difference? Well, studies show that around 35% of all environmental microplastics are shed from clothing.
Microplastic Filters (Washing Machines) Bill 2day introduced by @AlbertoCostaMP with cross party support. 2nd reading on 7th March 2025. Please support this important Bill 🩵🌎🌊👕

Well done @AlbertoCostaMP it’s good to see microplastics / microfibre filters on the agenda in Westminster again today:

Dolphins Are Exhaling Microplastics
New research highlights how extensive plastic pollution is—and how nonhuman species, including dolphins, are exposed.
“Our study found that microplastic particles exhaled by bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) are similar in chemical composition to those identified in human lungs.”
“In humans, inhaled microplastics can cause lung inflammation, which can lead to problems including tissue damage, excess mucus, pneumonia, bronchitis, scarring, and possibly cancer. Since dolphins and humans inhale similar plastic particles, dolphins may be at risk for the same lung problems.”

Microplastics have been found in human blood, placenta, brain tissue, bone marrow, breast milk and testicles (yep, you read those last two right). @CleanerSeasGp is try to tackle the microplastics problem, starting with capturing microfibres at a major source – your laundry.
A week ago, we learned about the very sad passing of @wallacejnichols His profound insights on our connection with water have touched many of us. As we remember him, we share one of our favorite passages from his book: Rest in peace J. 🌊💙🩵🌏🔵 #BlueMind#IWishYouWater
This powerful art piece reminds us of the threat microplastics pollution poses to our seas and planet and us homage to an incredible story teller who has inspired so many to live and protect our planet 🌎🩵🌊💙🌿💚🐋🐙🦍🦧🌎💙
🌎🩵Happy Birthday Sir David Attenborough 98 years young 🌎💚
{ Portrait of Sir David made in microplastics as part of our heARTworks campaign. The piece was made by the art students of Budehaven school based on an idea by @AvrilGreenaway at Cleaner Seas Project. 1.
We invited the very wonderful Rob Arnold to speak to the students as part of the process and as well as the students beach cleaning for their own microplastics, Rob kindly brought along a huge vat of microplastics for the artists to use.
