Writing & law. Nonfiction: EVERYTHING IS WATER (2024). Novels: THE WAR ARTIST (2019), CLOSER TO STONE (2012), and THE COMFORT OF FIGS (2008). @UQPbooks
I’m thrilled to say that my first book of non-fiction is now out & about in the world. It’s a book about the wonder of rivers, about a journey along the 344km Brisbane River/Maiwar, and ultimately it’s about change. Sharing with deep gratitude to all those who brought it to life.
New work from me, this time about @rhallwriter’s remarkable new novel Vortex. Compacting my thoughts into 800 words was difficult, but this is the kind of book that I wish more Australians would write + critically engage with. Get his novels back in print!

Thurs evening was an excellent Bris launch at Avid Reader of @lukestegemann ‘s magnificent “Madrid: A New Biography”. Great to celebrate with @WarrenKWard among others. Now for a literary journey to Madrid. “Madrid” sits comfortably beside Ackroyd’s “London” on the bookshelf.
Can we escape the sins of our fathers? Are we doomed to repeat them? These are the questions Michael Springer asks in his ambitious first novel, “The Flower Bed”. Bravo @MichaelSpring17 - I thoroughly enjoyed your sweeping innocence-to-experience tale.

“One lesson of [Everything Is Water] is that we need journeys and time to ponder because finding a viable philosophy for life is neither an easy task nor ever a completed project.” Thanks @StephenKeim1
So thrilled Deep Water has been shortlisted for the @QldLitAwards. And in such incredible company. Huge congrats to Bonnie Cassidy, Abbas El-Zein, @antloewenstein and Ellen van Neerven, and thanks to @SLQld. @PenguinBooksAus@ScribeUKbooks@HarperOneBooks

It was enormous fun talking this evening with David Marr on ABC Radio National's Late Night Live after David has taken over the helm of the program from Philip Adams.

Posting the recently released podcast of my conversation with Steven Lang about “Everything Is Water” at Outspoken Maleny on 14 June. An thoroughly enjoyable discussion as part of an excellent literary institution.

#EverythingisWater is #SimonCleary 's ode to the Brisbane River. Full of thoughts, beautifully described - ‘On the high bank to our right, two white cedars - yellow-leaved, deciduous - glow in the muted light. A whipbird calls from across the river.' #everythingiswater@uqpbooks
Launch of Patrick Holland’s new novel OBLIVION this Friday 12 July in Brisbane. Looking forward to this conversation very much. Beautifully published, as always, by @transitlounge2 https://t.co/CvEysnQwy7
