Evangelism is something we do together with God. God sovereignly “opens doors” Co4:3 & even “opened Lydia’s heart to believe the gospel” Acts16:14.

Nevertheless Paul had to “make it clear” Co4:4. He didn’t abdicate his personal responsibility because “it’s God who saves.”

If Christ is not at the center of a prophetic message, it is crucial to understand why discernment of spirits has historically been regarded as the most important charism among the Church’s doctors. This understanding underscores the necessity of ensuring that all prophetic revelations align with Christ’s Person and Work, and what Luke refers to as "the apostles' doctrine" (Acts 2:42- which has nothing whatsoever to do with today's contemporary apostles unless they are faithfully preaching what the apostles doctrine actually was and is).

I hesitated to post this at the beginning of Advent Season, and yet as I was reading Bonhoeffer's Letters From Prison, as he awaits his execution, I was deeply stirred. We live in a consumer-driven age and it impacts the ways in which we tend to interpret the season we now celebrate. There is nothing wrong with celebration, provided we do not forget what Advent is ultimately all about. For those of you who might take offense to this, I would ask you to humble yourself before God and hear the prophetic words of a man who gave his life for Christ as a witness even unto death.

And while Bonhoeffer sits in prison in 1944, he pens these words in the middle of a letter that is quite profound (all his letters are profound)...this one strikes me though as so "other" than what we want to hear these days....he will ultimately die for Christ at the hands of the Nazi regime.

I want to know where the prophets are...the real ones these days...not the opportunists, or the ego-inflated, the self-proclaimed authorities of divine revelation to the exclusion of genuine accountability; not the ones who prophesy for money or fame, or for being "clever" or even politically correct...all of us could learn a great deal at the feet of this truly transparent saint.

Thus our coming of age leads us to a truer recognition of our situation before God. God would have us know that we must live as those who manage their lives without God. The same God who is with us is the God who forsakes us (Mark 15:34!). The same God who makes us to live in the world without the working hypothesis of God is the God before whom we stand continually. Before God, and with God, we live without God. God consents to be pushed out of the world and onto the cross; God is weak and powerless in the world and in precisely this way, and only so, is at our side and helps us.

Whether our ears want to hear this genuine prophetic voice who is now among the martyrs before the Throne or not, Bonhoeffer speaks to a maturing faith, one that recognizes our existential condition before God. This is the kind of maturity that leads to an understanding that life must be managed without an immediate sense of God's intervention. It's a call to recognize God's presence in our autonomy and in the choices we freely make. There is not an ounce of magical thinking here at all. In this Advent Season as we celebrate the One who came to die for our sins, this is an essential truth.

If you believe salvation can only come by a “free will decision” to follow Jesus then you must admit all babies who die must go to hell.

But if you believe salvation is a sovereign act of God by election and predestination, then you can rest that God can save any baby He wills.
