So, you’ve heard it, right? Leave Malawi for South Africa, or better yet, hop on a plane to the UK, US, or China, and voilà, life becomes a buffet of easy money, good food, and Instagram-worthy moments. 🌟
But hey, before you pack your bags, let’s paint you a vivid picture of what life really looks like in the diaspora. 🧵👇
Malawi is experiencing a severe fuel crisis that has been there for weeks, yet the President, Pastor Lazarus Chakwera, continues to focus on pageantry and empty platitudes.
This fuel crisis stems from a shortage of foreign exchange, a consequence of a failing economy driven by incompetence and disastrous economic policies coupled with corruption.
Pastor Chakwera has proven to be a catastrophic leader and unmitigated disaster for Malawi, exemplifying how charismatic but shallow individuals charm their way into power, only to mimic the very actions of the leaders they once opposed.
Chakwera offered little beyond a Bible, a charismatic personality, and an American accent, nothing more, nothing less.
Some in the region may believe this is solely Malawi’s problem, but that would be a mistake, it is our problem and we should see it as such.
Malawi’s fuel crisis significantly impacts not only its own economy but also the broader region, particularly countries that trade with or rely on Malawi for goods and services.
Trucks delivering goods to Malawi struggle to refuel for their return journeys, as do buses operating routes between Malawi and neighbouring countries.
They end up buying fuel on the black market, this increases the cost of the services they provide because they pass on the extra cost to the end user.
A fuel crisis also affects employment, as businesses that dependent on fuel for their operations are forced to shut down, leading to job losses.
This creates an overspill of unemployed people seeking opportunities in neighbouring countries, which are already struggling with their own unemployment challenges.
As members of the Southern African Development Community, commonly known as SADC, our countries are deeply interconnected economically and depend on one another for regional economic growth and stability.
A fuel crisis in Malawi will inevitably have ripple effects on its neighbours, particularly those sharing borders with the Malawi.
As Malawians stare into the abyss before the next elections due in September 2025, the choices available to them couldn’t be more grim, Pastor Chakwera or former president Prof. Peter Mutharika who lost to Chakwera in 2020.
Those are the prominent names that will be on the ballot paper.
A bit like choosing between Emmerson Mnangagwa or Robert Mugabe.
My company emailed everyone a 20 dollar voucher and I clicked the link to claim it and it turns out it was a phishing test put out by IT😔
I have to do mandatory training now 💀
