Desperation and suffering are two of the most powerful motivators for change. Each being of the most uncomfortable emotions that we can endure.
When there are no more excuses or hiding places for our insecurities, we finally overcome our fears.
And then anything is possible.
What can be done to reignite the passion for work that so many Americans have lost?
I'm not entirely sure. But I think it starts by making sure every member of your team doesn't feel like a data point or that their livelihood can be easily leveraged in a cost-cutting strategy.
You cannot not assume agreement or understanding. No one sees the world quite as you do, nor do you theirs’.
As the team leader, you must share, over and again, the why in the work. You have to bring it to life and infuse it into even the smallest task.
Act now. Make the choice.
The decision that you will look back on as the defining moment in your life could be right now.
Or it could be right... now... or now... or now…
One exciting concept: it’s estimated that we think approx. 60,000 thoughts each day.
One disappointing concept: 95% of them are similar to the thoughts we had the previous one.
Right now, as the world is waking up, remember this… “everything around you that you call life was made up by people that were no smarter than you.”
What you accomplish today can build the reality of tomorrow.
To build a better community or work culture, do your part to understand and be mindful of what impacts or offends others.
At the same time, you should do your part to not be so offended by others or to not assume or assign motive.
Be kinder.
Be stronger.
You will be happier.
There are two types of people: those who are more concerned with, or excited by the things that they already know and those who are more concerned with, or excited by the things that they don’t.
If you’re thirsty for knowledge, you’re always willing to learn a new perspective or from someone who has a different approach - even when it’s a concept to which you are very familiar.
There’s an element of sales in all business and almost every role - even parenting - and sales is all about belief.
Do you believe in your solution - that your client is better off with your solution? Does your belief come through in your messaging?
If not, explore why.
Tell your story. Tell the market why you do what you do for as long as you have been doing it.
Talk about your origin . Talk about the need for innovation along the way. Talk about the ups and downs.
You are the difference in what you do.
How many languages can a child learn?
As many as you teach them.
Children do not lack the capacity, imagination, or the curiosity for learning. They need only guidance and access to knowledge.
You don’t need different goals but perhaps a different teacher.
Inspiration is an amazing feeling. A jolt of electricity in the form of an idea, a connection, clarity, or a willingness to move, physically or otherwise. Ideally this phenomenon bubbles up from within; we’re overtaken with determination and a drive to bring our imagined outcome to fruition. A bit hopeful, romantic even. But what happens when the inspiration won’t come easy – or not at all?
To be a professional in almost any endeavor is to root your actions in a set of principles, forward movement toward an outcome, or a mission. To do that work that needs to be done. And, at times, that means generating inspiration – or at least the conditions where inspiration can occur.
For some, the blank page or canvas is intimidating. So start writing. Begin with a few broad strokes. Start the process. Build a discipline for output generation. You’ll find quickly whether you’re on the right path, or when you’ll be inspired to pursue a new one.
Mid-August in Reykjavík sees the sun circle the sky and barely dipping beneath the horizon to the north. From the Kvika footbaths we watched as the light danced over the Snæfellsjökull glacier-topped volcano in the distance. And even against the cooling air of the night, the footbaths were too hot. So we admired the steam and process by which this small pot of water, here above the Arctic Circle, could be superheated while the North Atlantic churned 10 yards away.
At some point, all that is left is to do is what must be done.
Prepare. Strategize. Learn. Forecast. Hedge.
Then act. You’ll learn so much more by doing then by pondering the outcomes and alternatives.
And who knows, your plan might just work!
Inspiration can feel like a moment of clarity; your mind fixed on a point of focus. What comes next can be messy and uncertain - especially for those who depend on you, or for whom you staying right were you were was more comfortable. A thread.
It struck me how calm and even comforting personal and professional stagnation is. And how the infusion of energy, like nurturing resources, can lead to a lack of clarity, even messy outcomes...
