Mitch Johnson shares the biggest lesson he learned from Gregg Popovich.
"How important people and relationships are."
"He understands people and relationships and the significance of every moment and every touch point with every person."
The best leaders and coaches invest in people.
Then he explained what investing in people really looks like:
"That can be having to yell and hold someone accountable. And that can be to put your arm around someone's shoulder and love 'em."
The best leaders combine high standards with high support.
"He did it better than anybody, I think, that's ever walked the sidelines."
"I will attempt to do it my way in whatever that looks like moving forward."
Great leadership isn't one style. It's knowing your people well enough to give them what they need.
Invest in the relationships. Care about people, hold them to their potential, and lead in your style.

Azzi Fudd: The DMV is who I am, where I'm from. It helped develop me, raise me, get me to where I am. Just the competitiveness of the DMV is, I feel like, just what started things for me."
MetroBall DC 6’3 2028 Jacob Hill (Hammond Hd, MD) blends physical and punishing post play with nimble footwork, mobility and a smooth shooting stroke. His footwork and body control as a semi slasher type is quite impressive as he’s able to score off the bounce either with overpowering moves off the bounce or with a sneaky quick burst and ability to slice through traffic and score. Jacob is a threat with the jumper mostly in the mid range areas and showcases fluid mechanics and a smooth stroke. He moves his feet nicely and defends in space. Strong post defender can move people off their spot and he’s a very good rebounder. Runs the floor nicely, high motor! #BigShots #BooWilliamsLegacyClassic @BigShotsToday@BigShotsGlobal

Truly could never ask for a better head coach and staff for the 1st season of my college journey
This coach and mentor @UNCG_MikeJones and his staff have changed me and so many people on and off the court. Go be great like you always show.
On the court success means very little in this era of College athletics and it stands true, yet again with @UNCG_MikeJones not getting an extension after 3 straight 20win seasons and no real 💰 to retain talent... some that was developed in house on his watch!!! 👋
Devasting😞 I am sure that you and RANDY💪🏽 will get GRABBED✊🏽 up by another phenomenal university. This coaching staff did not deserve to get the SHAFT🍆 like this. I know UNCG Admin will regret this.
A great and proven coach, to be sure, but the gold standard as a man and a leader.
Like I said, he's going to land somewhere and instantly make them better.
Class Act. This man didn't know who I was & welcomed me to a workout. The entire coaching staff spoke w/ me & took the time to answer any questions I had. @UNCG_MikeJones took time out of his busy schedule just to talk to me about his program & philosophy toward coaching. (1/2)
Whoever gets @UNCG_MikeJones next just know you’re going to get a worker and a genuine human being. He builds young people to be fulfilled beyond the court.
I’m not his agent, but I do know what success in college basketball looks like. When a coach builds up two programs, wins, and cares deeply about mentoring, teaching valuable lessons, and serving as a role model, that’s the person you want to hire. Mike Jones is all of the above. @UNCG_MikeJones
Coach Jones has a long and successful résumé in the game, it could be a big blessing in disguise that UNCG went in a different direction. If the only goal Is the NCAA Tournament or win the regular season title at UNCG he didn’t do it-but he was winning (57–33 in conference games.)
The fact that his two best players left for greener pastures: imagine still having Kenyon Giles now at Wichita State (19 ppg) or Donovan Atwell at Texas Tech (45% from three)
A Final Four assistant at VCU, he then took Radford to their third NCAA tournament as he won the Big South Tournament in 2018.
He won two Big South regular-season titles in 2019 and 2020. He was also a two-time Big South Coach of the Year (2018, 2020) and the SoCon co‑Coach of the Year (Media) in 2023.
He is a thorough and excellent evaluator of talent and knows how to develop players. Don’t forget Javonte Green at Radford (2015–2019); he became the first player in program history to make an NBA roster. Carlik Jones was next.
The profession knows success, Mike Jones will be a head coach again.
Sometimes in life, God smiles on you with the people He puts in your life. Coach Jones, I can’t put into words the impact you’ve had on me over the past 15+ years. Thank you, love you, and I KNOW whatever you do next will be Elite!
more. So here’s a toast 🥂 to my supporters & deuces ✌️ to the rest. I look forward to my next opportunity to continue my record of success in coaching and mentoring young men to their own excellence on & off the court.
With LOVE and APPRECIATION
Mike Jones
