🎉We are pleased to announce that Uma Kumaran MP has been elected as the new chair of the Climate Change APPG. We look forward to working with @Uma_Kumaran and the APPG's members to push for climate action to go further and faster ⚡️
Thank you to cross-party colleagues for electing me as Chair of the Climate APPG today @ClimateAPPG
Before I was elected I worked globally to advance climate action. I promised that my commitment would continue from Parliament
Denying the science was once a preserve of the fringes, but more and more we are seeing it politicised
We must push back and keep advancing. Bolder climate action helps our economy, tackles a leading cause of migration and helps protect our planet for generations to come🌍
And Minister for Climate Action, @KatieJWhite, reaffirmed the UK Government’s commitment to clean energy and argues that continued climate action is essential for both climate goals and energy security.
The Chair of the Climate APPG @LukeMLabour just called a debate on our progress in tackling climate change. The message was clear: we must double down and move faster, for the sake of our energy security, natural environment, and a liveable planet for future generations 👇
APPG member @Wera_Hobhouse insisted that the UK’s dependence on fossil fuels caused by previous failure to invest sufficiently in renewables and home insulation led directly to the spike in energy bills in recent years.
It was a pleasure to host the Minister for Industry, @ChrisMcDonaldMP, for a roundtable today to discuss the government’s Clean Energy Jobs Plan, which sets out how the government plans to deliver and support the workforce needed to meet the UK’s clean energy ambitions👷⚡️
The discussion covered the government’s plans to:
🔧Deliver a pipeline of skilled workers across every nation and region
🤝Ensure clean energy jobs are good jobs
👷Harness the potential of the existing workforce
APPG member @JeevunSandher highlighted that the UK’s dependence on fossil fuels has led to an affordability crisis and asked how the UK's transition away from fossil fuels will tackle the cost of household energy head on.
During DESNZ oral questions today, Climate APPG members highlighted why climate action is an imperative for the UK’s energy security, lower bills, and the future of our planet. 🧵👇
As climate costs escalate, at home and abroad, the cost of the transition is falling, as technologies innovate and improve.
APPG member @PollyBLabour argued that investment in renewables will reduce the cost of energy and provide vital energy security in an uncertain world.
The discussion focused on:
⚡️The government’s vision for the North Sea’s transition
🌎The government’s commitment to a 1.5°C and climate science-aligned approach to UK oil and gas production
👷How the government's plan delivers for workers, communities and supply chains
