Nothing says "sustainable" like "grinding bones, some organs and fatty trimmings into a coarse slurry".

[James Wood @ClimateBeard]

A backwards step. Some questions.

🤨 Why is HMT justifying a third runway with a report *commissioned by Heathrow*?
🤝 How many meetings has the Chancellor had with Heathrow lobbyists?
💨 How will aviation emissions be kept in line with carbon budgets?

[James Wood @ClimateBeard]

I'm sure all the newspapers constantly painting renewables as a waste of public money are similarly vexed by the billions handed out to gas plants.

Right?

Right?!?!

Expand Heathrow? More like Heath-NO.

Private jets suck.

Maybe we should ask people what they think rather than relying on the frothy culture war headlines and soundbites...?

Any party expecting a ratings boost by pissing off environmentalist (e.g. with massive carbon-budget-busting airport expansions) would do well to take heed.

[Steve Akehurst @SteveAkehurst]

What are the main reasons voters have switched from Labour?

Winter fuel allowance trumps all else.

After that, impatience over public services + cost of living.

Immigration less salient. Net Zero of no salience whatsoever. Scandals less than I expected.

Rich people fly a lot. The trick is to get them to contribute without squeezing family holidays ✈️

Confronting cognitive dissonance is really, really hard.

Bravo to Anthony for showing it can be done!

Air France Captain Anthony Viaux resigned from his Job after 20 years in the profession as he could not justify the pollution created by Aviation (aircraft), in line with his profession.

Anthony Viaux : "I really loved working at Air France. But today I feel the urgent need to realign myself with my inner compass, which tells me that my convictions are no longer in line with this profession."

"Of course, I am aware that my resignation will not save the planet of course, but I couldn't burn thousands of liters of kerosene every time I went to work."

Good news klaxon 🎉

In 2024 the UK...

✅ Phased out coal power
📉 More than halved fossil fuelled power vs 2014
📈 More than doubled renewable power vs 2014
💨 Produced almost as much wind power as gas power - with wind set to overtake gas this year

Sadly in aviation, "busiest" = "most polluting".

I was one of these festive flyers, coming home from Belfast on NYE.

But I preferred the boat on the way out, which has a fab festive vibe around Christmas. Even bumped into ace ex-colleague @GreenerGina

Crazy stat about emissions from the Olympics last summer.

A first class flight from London to Singapore: £8,000.

Frying the planet with champagne and caviar: priceless.

Turning forests into fuel. What could possibly go wrong?

[James Wood @ClimateBeard]

The idea that we can massively expand biofuels for planes is for the birds.

Or rather, against the birds. Expanding biofuels is bad for nature. Period. Even waste biofuels.

The only sustainable future for aviation will be based on using 💨 & ☀️ energy.

Contrails have a net warming effect on the planet, at least as important as the one caused by aviation’s CO2 emissions.

But good news: simple measures to avoid their formation could have a huge impact. So what are we waiting for?

Today 50 climate and aviation scientists from across the globe are calling on the aviation industry to take action on contrails.

Addressing contrails from planes is a no-regrets decision that will help slow climate change – but the time to act is now.
