Nantes and Lyon have seen clashes between protestors and police. Continuing.
Tensions high in Marseille and Rennes but no widespread rioting.
At about 15:30 in Paris (where it’s all been pretty quiet so far) protesters tried to build a barricade on the périphérique at Porte de Bercy but backed off when police arrived in numbers.
For the moment the police would seem to be largely on top of things. Keeping marches away from city centres has worked.
Plus police report only 140,000 demonstrators countrywide. Far fewer than last week.
But events still developing. Masked troublemakers in black now emerging in Lille. Standoff with police, who just fired their water canon.

Sorry NYTimes @EricLiptonNYT, there is no credible evidence that emissions of ethylene oxide cause cancer. The evidence for cancer is not close to compelling among heavily exposed 20th century workers. Local communities exposed to much lower facility emissions? Absolutely nothing. Keep in mind that 35-40% of people will be diagnosed with cancer over the course of their lifetime. That some people who live near industrial facilities get cancer is not indicative that their cancers were caused by the facility. This article is just more wreckless fearmongering.

Public swimming pools face closure because of severe drought, despite warnings of a winter of flooding.
Ministers will decide next week whether to impose even stricter rules on the use of water in areas of the south of England under hosepipe bans.
Two major water companies, South West Water and South East Water, have submitted applications for a “non-essential use ban” in their areas.
The restrictions, which have not been used in Britain for 20 years, would cover businesses including public swimming pools, car washes, commercial window cleaners and gardeners.

They would effectively close down any business that regularly uses water for “non-essential” operations.
