VJ Day — We Will Remember Them
Today, on VJ Day, we remember the end of the Second World War and, above all, the men and women whose courage, service and sacrifice helped bring it to an end.
For those who served in the Far East, the war continued long after victory had been declared in Europe. They endured brutal conditions, separation from their families, captivity, hunger, disease and the constant uncertainty of whether they would ever return home.
Many never did.
They were sons and daughters, husbands and wives, fathers, brothers, sisters and friends. Ordinary people who found themselves living through extraordinary circumstances, and who gave more than most of us today could ever imagine being asked to give.
VJ Day is an opportunity to remember them.
To remember those who fought and died.
Those who suffered as prisoners of war.
Those who worked, nursed and supported the war effort.
And those who finally returned home, often carrying experiences that remained with them for the rest of their lives.
The world they lived in was very different from ours. We should learn from that history — the good and the bad — because forgetting it serves nobody.
But remembrance does not require us to agree with every decision, policy or attitude of the past.
Whatever our personal beliefs or politics today, they should not determine the respect we show to those who served and those who fell. We can debate history, question decisions and hold different views while still recognising the very real human sacrifice made by a generation that came before us.
History should be understood, learned from and never forgotten. And neither should they.
On VJ Day, we remember their courage, their suffering and their sacrifice.
We will remember them.
🌹 Lest we forget.

Thanks @GOVUK. Seeing the news over the last couple of days kinda made us all aware it’s a bit toasty out there and to be careful. #wildfire#emergencyalert#ukgov#fyp
@reformparty_uk@Nigel_Farage will win by a landslide. I was proud to help support his campaign over the last couple of weeks. Speaking to the people on the door and in the street. It’s clear he has the support of Clacton.
16 years ago, I was sent to Afghanistan to help defend our democracy and the freedoms we enjoy today.
Today, I was out in Clacton fighting a very different battle — one that could prove to be among the most significant parliamentary contests of this century.
Proud to stand alongside @Nigel_Farage and an incredible army of volunteers, campaigning to win back Clacton and put the interests of the British people first.
From serving my country abroad to standing up for it here at home — the fight for our democracy continues. 🇬🇧

🚨illegal migrant arrested after harassing a minor in Watton, Norfolk.
This has got to stop! Our residents deserve the safety and freedoms promised to them. Stop prioritising the needs of others over our own!
