Our fifth-annual Civics Matters trip is officially underway 🇺🇸
High school students from Arizona schools are headed to Washington D.C. where they’ll learn about civics first hand, while exploring our nation’s capital.

Educational opportunities and civic engagement are critical to the future of South Texas.
I had the opportunity to meet with students participating in the Society of Martha Washington (SMW) Scholarship Program during their educational visit to Washington, D.C. through @CloseUp_DC.
We talked about the role of Congress, the legislative process, and the importance of participating in our democracy. The students asked thoughtful questions about public policy and shared their perspectives on issues affecting their communities and our country. I also welcomed the groups into the House Appropriations Committee so they could see firsthand where Congress works through funding decisions that impact communities across Texas and the nation.
Programs like the SMW Scholarship Program provide students with valuable opportunities to experience government firsthand, learn about our nation’s history, and gain a deeper understanding of public service and civic responsibility.
Thank you to the Society of Martha Washington, the Close Up Foundation, and the students for taking the time to visit Capitol Hill. I appreciate the conversation and wish them continued success.
We’re grateful to the @JNJNews Federal Affairs Enterprise Initiatives team for helping create a space where students can engage across perspectives, expand their vision, and discover the role they can play in shaping the future.
Close Up was proud to partner with Johnson & Johnson to bring high school students from New Jersey and Massachusetts to the nation’s capital to explore leadership, public policy, and the issues impacting their communities through the J&J Civic Scholars Program.

The Declaration of Independence turns 250 this year. What better way to mark the occasion than by reflecting on the question: What kind of citizen am I?
I have been a part of the @CloseUp_DC Foundation since 1972 when I went as a high school student, then worked for them, and continued going there to work with students at many Inaugural programs. I found my schedule from 1972.
My first day on Capitol Hill! Wash DC

Was there twice, with @CloseUp_DC program, later that year, I was able to get several students of my #workshop and myself to see Gerald Warren, deputy press secretary.
Toured West Wing.
