Kinda lame that Super Metal Sonic is still just blue but with a golden aura. It’s one of the things that always bugged me about Sonic Mania Adventures.
SEGA has confirmed to Sonic City that the powered-up Metal Sonic in the new Memories and Beyond trailer is Super Metal Sonic!
A Japanese dub is also in production.

@RemixedNex Also, the tweet I originally quoted literally says that this is indeed “Super Metal Sonic” and not just a power-up. Which confirms robots can turn super using the chaos emeralds. They just decided not to change his color scheme for whatever reason.
Sometimes I wonder how Shadow would’ve been written here if Battle was actually created after Shadow 05. Would’ve been interesting to see a Shadow who moved on from his past here. Probably would’ve also cleared up a lot of misconceptions that were caused by his writing in Battle.
@Arkhamman247986 The actual reason is because this game and Sonic Heroes were both being made at the same time. Battle actually came out a month before Heroes. So they probably didn’t take Shadow’s amnesia into account when writing this game. And Shadow 05 wasn’t even conceptualized yet.
@RemixedNex I looked and supposedly Tyson said on Twitter that in Adventures it wasn’t a full super form. Although, if the post existed it has since been deleted, so I’m still skeptical. Either way, he never said that the reason for it is because robots can’t go super with the chaos emeralds
I think Shadow is fine here, it’s pretty obvious he would’ve saved her anyway, his line comes off more as banter than anything. Rouge is the one that’s weird, she shouldn’t be surprised by him saving her.
i can chalk up why i don’t like him in that arc with just this example
this implies he would have let rouge drop if saving her didn’t put him in a good position
and it doesn’t help that rouge is SURPRISED by him saving her
@LPfgr3752 “Most”. Also, a character can smile in more than one way. The expressions here are still pretty different than the ones in those Archie panels.
Honestly, most of these don’t fit Shadow. People confuse characters being less expressive with not having emotions. But a cast having varying expressiveness adds diversity and reinforces their personalities. Characters can have emotions without all expressing them in the same way
Recent IDW is probably the most perfect Shadow characterization we’ve gotten in 20 years. Archie never really tried to make him game accurate and kinda turned him into Knuckles. It’s probably one of the main reasons why he’s mischaracterized so often now. But IDW is just Shadow
I haven't read all of the Archie stuff but from what I've seen with Shadow, I HIGHLY prefer this over his characterisation in IDW (not to sound like an IDW hater).
Where is his heart? His soul? He feels dull these days. I wish we saw his soft side more. He's just kind of a dick.
People say “Without You” should’ve been used here. But the song is all about Shadow’s struggles, which are tackled throughout the game. Using it here would be implying that Shadow ends the game in the exact same place that he starts it and his entire character arc means nothing.
From a storytelling perspective, if Sonic became evil (thus losing his freedom), he would 100% be beaten by Shadow, Metal, or Silver. Thematically, the reason Sonic is so strong is cause he’s free. Take that from him and you take away what separates him from someone like Metal.
I hate when a mischaracterization/misunderstanding of a character spreads so much and becomes so widely accepted by the fandom that it starts to bleed into official material
Professional Sonic speedrunner Wimpyfox explains the problem with the Ian Flynn characterization of Sonic and Shadow
"That's how backwards the characterization is, that literal parallel characters have borderline swapped roles"

I find this ironic because you could’ve said this same thing in reverse at any point before Gens. Shadow did move on in Shadow 05, and wanting him to go back to Maria would’ve been “wanting the character to be what they’re not”. Then Gens went back on that decision 20 years later
Asking for him to move on from Maria is like asking for Amy to stop crushing for Sonic.
It's not character development, it's just wanting the character to be something that they're not.
I hate how everyone treats her as if she can’t do anything now. She used to go on adventures and nobody would bat an eye. Even her mom knew she can handle herself despite her being a child, before they turned her into the “mama bear” trope. Now she needs a chaperone to even race.
Massive missed opportunity to not flesh her out more in Gens. Some may argue that being one-note works better for how she symbolizes a pure goodness in humanity. But her role already changed a lot in Shadow 05, so I think making her more than a plot device wouldn’t have been bad.
And while I don’t think any of these are amazingly written, I think Shadow is good or at least decent in all of them. And they all wrote Shadow as already being moved on, he never mentioned Maria or her wish or anything. Unlike post-Shadow Gens where he mentions it constantly
That’s what Shadow 05 already did for his character for 20 years until Shadow Gens. Some people say we only got to see him that way in 06, but Shadow was in plenty of other games too, even if most weren’t mainline. Rivals 1+2, Free riders, Chronicles, Forces, Murder of Sonic.

Sega needs to allow him to move on.
Give him a story where he finally learns to let go of the past. The biggest reason why I see hate around him is he's completely stagnant in terms of character.
Once he does and relaxes a bit, I feel he'll be far more likeable character.
