Recognizing the need for education, the Freedmen’s Bureau, Freewill Baptists of New England and John Storer came together and Storer College was born. The school survived for 88 years. What began as a one-room missionary school for former slaves grew into a college. #PreserveHBCU

Friendship Junior College was founded in 1891 under the name Friendship Institute. After a curriculum for ministerial training was organized, the Institute gave emphasis to the purpose for of training preachers and teachers. The College closed its doors in 1981. #PreserveHBCU

In response to the Great Depression, Violet Lewis began teaching courses in secreterial work from her home in 1928. This was the start of Lewis College of Business, the first and only HBCU in Michigan. The College closed in 2013 after less than 100 years. #PreserveHBCU

In 1892, Mary Holmes Seminary was founded to educate black girls in Mississippi. After a fire, the school moved from Jackson to West Point; the school suffered another fire but eventually rebuilt and became a co-ed community college. MHC closed in 2005. #PreserveHBCU
