Alabama is one of the poorest states in the nation, yet 1 of the hardest to qualify for Medicaid. Rural hospitals are closing, and maternity deserts are growing. Hospitals are operating in negative margins, driving up the cost of healthcare for insured and uninsured patients

Yet our state has refused federal funding and Medicaid expansion for over 10 years, and our elected officials seem to care more about monitoring people's religion than expectant mothers, sick children, and the elderly.
