#ELITE: MY STORY IN THE BLACK (AND SOMETIMES BLUE)
This is going to be a long rambling thread (because I can, so there!), of my personal history with Elite.
I’m going to break it into 4 parts, in some attempt to impose structure on my ramblings.
/1
Generally getting older doesn’t bother me. Except for back pain. How the f*ck can you injure your self to the point of incapacity picking a kids toy up off the floor?!?!?!
Despite all the disappointment of recent announcements, and knowing that I won’t get to experience it personally in the foreseeable future, watching (and particularly listening to) the carrier jump sequence was pretty fricking cool.
@wayne7615 More clarification from @frontierdev and some indication that a CMDR transfer tool is in the works would I think be better to come sooner than later. I suspect that there’s a significant number of console players who would transfer given the option.
I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but if the current trajectory continues and isn’t just folks venting to get it off their chest, there may need to be a bit of a thinning of the follow list. ☹️
@wayne7615 … this is probably a good thing for the game on PC, allowing story and content to be taken in interesting directions, and also from a corporate perspective to encourage uptake of Odyssey.
It is not, of course, good news for console players, as their gameplay choices narrow.
Despite my emphasis on the word “never” in this tweet, having slept on the whole thing and pondered further today I reserve the right to change my mind. Right now my trust and opinion of @frontierdev is at a low ebb, but not beyond being rebuilt (even in face of past evidence).
As I said already, I intend to continue playing @EliteDangerous for as long as the servers remain operational, I still enjoy the game and won’t curtail my own pleasure for no gain; but I will *never* send another penny of my money in the direction of @frontierdev
Reading through discussions around transferring of CMDRs from console to PC and the speculation on how difficult it could be …
With 20+ years of DBA experience under my belt, I have learned to NEVER underestimate how awful database and general backend design can be. Never.
@jaimescrawford I completely understand the decision to focus on PC development, and do believe that it is a right decision, disappointing as it is; but the messaging has been poorly (to say the least) handled.
Will the console decision drive audience numbers down for streamers showcasing @EliteDangerous, which will drive down ED streams, which will result in a drop in popularity of the game across all platforms?
Idle morning musings continue.
If you consider streaming as a form of viral marketing and a dipstick for the health of a game, have @frontierdev unwittingly initiated a negative feedback loop for ED?
@GreyAreaUK Very much this.
I have a long career in IT, I understand the whys and wherefores of these decisions, but the terrible messaging is a hard misstep to understand or forgive.
I think it’s important to reiterate and to understand this:
- I am disappointed at the decision to drop consoles (but can understand the reasoning).
- I am ANGRY about how the decision was communicated by @frontierdev (and the sense it was made some time ago and “hidden”).
Sorry for the rambling thread, but to wrap it up…
I supported this game when I had no thought of playing it (see my pinned thread), and I genuinely hope that it continues to grow and be successful, but that hope feels very much like a candle in a storm right now.
… but that what it also means is that #Odyssey will be “fixed” for some value of “fixed”, and then that’s all folks.
Maybe it’s just early and the coffee hasn’t kicked in and the cynicism is still rising high, and of course acknowledging that I’m speculating wildly.
