Today marks the 50th anniversary of the formation of Commando Sappers. After yesterday’s hoofing effort by 59 Cdo Sqn to yomp the 59 miles from Dartmoor back to Chivenor, today we held a service of commemoration and remembrance to mark the anniversary. United We Conquer!

As this week’s anniversary of Op CHARIOT reminds us, there were, of course, Royal Engineer Commandos during WW2. However, it was not until 1971 that 59 Cdo Sqn, which had been providing engineer support to 3 Cdo Bde since the mid-60s, was re-titled 59 Indep Cdo Sqn RE.

Remembering #OTD in 1942 the raid on St Nazaire and the actions of Sgt Thomas Durrant. He remains the only soldier to be awarded a VC during a naval action, and on the recommendation of the enemy commander. His medals are held at @REMuseum #SapperVCs #SapperHistory

@Barney065 ‘Bulgy’ Thorne caught my eye with his CMG from whatever BDSUS was then called. Went on to lead on FORTITUDE NORTH (deception which fixed German troops in Norway) and subsequent occupation of Norway following German surrender - in command of 1st Airborne Div; with Milorg.
