Have you experienced any challenges as a minority in your professional field?
Can we tell if challenges come from gender, luck, personal failure, or other identifiers? Often, in grey areas, self-doubt, overconfidence, or anger misleads us.
Name: Marcela Álvaro
Which challenges have you encountered as a female scientist in STEM?
The biggest challenge was acknowledging myself as a scientist, battling impostor syndrome, and learning to speak up. Harassment from professors and colleagues was another constant issue.
Name: Marie Grill
Have you experienced any difficulties as a woman in your field?
No, I have not experienced any difficulties. I have at several occasions noticed that I was the only woman in a group of coworkers, but without feeling that it was something negative for me.
Name: Yao Ge
Have you experienced any difficulties as a woman in your field?
Obtaining a degree or position in this field is harder for women. When I applied for a postdoc, men were preferred. Women face lower expectations, but achieving success requires more effort.
Name: Alonso Rosas-Hernández
Have you experienced any challenges as a minority in your professional field?
I have been fortunate to work in research environments in Germany, the USA, and now Denmark, where I have felt welcomed and treated equally regardless of my origin.
Name: Marie-Josée Haglund Halsør
In Norway, where open problematic behavior is not politically correct, I face subtle gender biases. Showing more of my personal style helps counteract “invisibility” and promotes diversity at work, allowing me to occupy the space I deserve.
Say hello to our Early Stage Researchers! Each ESR within the CO2PERATE network has their own project focused on areas of sustainable chemistry and utilization of CO2 as an organic synthon. In the next posts, we will briefly outline the PhD projects of each individual ESR.

Have you experienced any difficulties as a woman in your field?
Early discouragement in science impacts women's confidence. Despite supportive teachers, I faced challenges as a working-class Latin-American woman abroad. However, awareness is improving.
