Excited to join the 10th anniversary celebrations of the Sub-Saharan Africa Advanced Consortium for Biostatistics (SSACAB). For the past decade, SSACAB has helped build a strong community of African biostatisticians and data scientists whose work is shaping public health research and policy across the continent. It's inspiring to connect with fellows, researchers, partners, and funders to celebrate this journey and the impact of African-led science in addressing today's health challenges and preparing for those of the future. Congratulations, SSACAB, on your 10th anniversary!

Ephy Akoko, a Master’s student in Immunology, presenting her research at the Pwani University International Transdisciplinary Conference and Innovation Expo, highlighting how locally developed diagnostic tools can improve care for people living with sickle cell anaemia in Africa.
Her study evaluates a locally developed alloantibody screening panel against the widely used panel globally. The findings show excellent agreement between the two methods, with both producing similar results in 94% of cases.
Importantly, the local panel identifies 24 additional alloantibodies that the conventional panel misses. These findings suggest that diagnostic tools developed using African donor profiles can better detect clinically significant antibodies and help reduce transfusion-related complications.
The study underscores the importance of developing context-specific solutions to strengthen blood transfusion safety and improve outcomes for African populations.

Panel Spotlight
Day 2 at the 2nd Nairobi Health Scientific Conference 2025, our Head of Engagement,@muhache , and Head of Communications, @NyandukoCynthia , joined a panel discussion on “The Practice of Science Communication and Engagement in Research: Shared Experiences from Kenya.”
The discussion explored how effective communication and meaningful engagement strengthen the link between research, policy, and community impact. Drawing from their experiences they shared insights on translating scientific evidence into action and building trust between researchers and the public.
Our PGD Cohort 3 kicked off their taught modules before heading to Junju Dispensary, a KHDSS site, for a practical field experience. They gained first-hand insight into how community relationships and fieldwork shape ethical health research.
