After 25 years in education, I am officially stepping into a new role as Assistant Principal at Katy Taylor High School. The truth is, I never needed a title to do what I love, supporting students, building relationships, and helping people grow. But I have to admit, Assistant Principal Spivey doesn't sound too bad. ππ½ Your girl is trading in the gradebook for a walkie-talkie and moving from the register to the fries! π€£π€£ Katy Taylor you just hired a whole vibeπ!

We finished second.
I remember taking the trophy from the meet director and waiting to feel excited.
I didn't...
The year before, we'd finished next to last in our district. One kid under 17:00. At our first 5k, Seven Lakes, we were 214 points behind first place.
That February, I'd had enough.
I tore up every workout I'd borrowed from coaches I respected and built something from scratch. My beliefs about how distance runners actually develop.
It wasn't polished. But for the first time, I understood every part of it and why it was there.
Want to know the first sign something had changed?
We beat two programs in an August tri-meet that had easily handled us the previous season.
I didn't say anything to the team...
But driving home I kept thinking: "Hmmmm...this might actually be working."
Then came Seven Lakes again.
We came in with a plan. Everything felt different.
It was different.
We finished second. Twenty-three points out of first.
Standing there holding that trophy, I wasn't thinking about the result.
I was thinking: "I CAN do this. I know what I'm doing."
Not we won. Not they'll respect us now.
Just that.
Here's why that moment mattered more than the trophy.
I'd left a twelve-year career in software to coach high school kids in XC and Track. A lot of people thought that was strange. And part of me had never stopped wondering if they were right.
The results didn't answer that question.
Results can come from luck, from talent you inherited, from borrowed training that happened to fit.
What answered it was understanding...
Knowing WHAT I was building, WHY I was building it, and what each piece was supposed to PRODUCE.
That's the thing nobody told me when I started coaching.
You can survive not knowing what you're doing. You keep the calendar full and the season pointed somewhere. You borrow something that worked elsewhere and hope it translates.
But you never quite feel in command.
There's always that quiet question underneath: Is this actually building what I think it's building?
The day you can answer that honestly is the day everything changes.
Not because you suddenly have better workouts.
Because you finally know what the workouts are for.
Please help us welcome Sophia Haberer as the newest Assistant Coach for Girls Basketball! π

Just because you like to workout or you used to do X,Y,Z or you βtrainβ so and so doesnβt mean youβre actually qualified to run the weight room and field work for athletic programs. Thereβs an art and science to it that takes practice, education & failure to be an S&C coach
HS sports:
Lifting with your team 2x/wk in the off-season doesnβt always guarantee you will win a title. It just increases your likelihood of success.
But not training with your team 2x/wk in the off-season almost always guarantee that you will not win a title. It wildly decreases your chances of success.
