I think this is something that is much more manageable at the D1 level. There are definitely some smaller schools that have good situations as far as pay and benefits for assistants, but most do not. Cannot blame a guy who’s been making $5k for wanting to go somewhere else
A college arm gets a new pitching coach every season and we wonder why guys plateau or break down.
Development is not a one year project. It’s a relationship. New eyes every fall means a new plan, new cues, new mechanical fixes, and the player is trying to make sense of all the changes.
Continuity of the coaching staff matters a lot.
The biggest issue in recruiting isn't what most people think.
A recent text from a Power 4 Recruiting Coordinator:
"About 60% of the time when I'm at a game and ask for a roster, either the travel coach doesn't have one or it isn't updated.
So when I see a player I like, I sometimes have no idea who he is."
Let that sink in.
- Parents worry about showcases.
- Players worry about social media.
- Everyone worries about playing in the biggest tournaments.
Meanwhile, one of the most basic parts of recruiting is often getting overlooked:
Having an accurate, updated roster available for college coaches.
If a coach can't identify a player, it's hard for that player to get recruited.
To be fair, this isn't meant as a shot at travel coaches.
Many do an outstanding job.
Most are juggling practices, games, travel, administration, communication, and a hundred other responsibilities while getting paid far less than people realize.
But it's a reminder that recruiting often comes down to fundamentals.
*An updated roster.
*Correct contact information.
*Accurate graduation year.
*Jersey numbers that match.
Simple things.
If you're a parent or player, don't assume someone else is handling it.
Offer to help.
Ask to review the roster before events.
Make sure your information is correct.
Because sometimes the difference between being seen and being overlooked isn't talent.
It's whether the coach knows who you are.
I'm fortunate that I'm not tied to a travel organization, showcase company, or college program.
I get to sit in the middle and hear what everyone is saying.
And this issue comes up far more often than most people realize.
I created a free roster template that you can just copy and use below.
Always said that if I would’ve gotten a college head coaching job my dad was coming along with me, even if he’d never coached much baseball beyond helping me. 35 years on the football sideline was enough to help you look at in game decision making
As we are seeing… it pays to have an old guy who has seen a lot standing in the dugout. Just standing up for old guys everywhere. Go with experience. There I said it.
I would argue that re seeding doesn’t necessarily work. Point in case- the D3 World Series. #1 team lost the first game to the #8 seed, had to work their way all the way back to make the finals tomorrow. At some point seeds are out the window- everyone is good and capable
We really need re-seeding.
1 & 2 are both out.
UGA who is 3 gets probably one of the toughest super regionals, while your 7 seeds get absolute cakewalks lol.
@chessabouche Unfortunately a suspension is the only thing that gives teeth to an ejection to make it worthwhile. It’s the only thing that makes players think twice about doing it again
In a lot of ways. I don’t know that I’ll never find a way back unless it’s coaching my own kids and following their journey (if that’s what they choose to do), but I’ll always be a fan of the game and enjoy talking ball and trying to share experiences with others.
Gotta say this app is cool sometimes. I’m just a guy out here who didn’t play much in college, coached in college for a little while, and couldn’t figure out how to make it work for life commenting and sharing thoughts and opinions into a void of noise sometimes. In the past few
Weeks I’ve had some pretty cool people in the game who I respect and admire from afar comment/like/retweet something I’ve said, or comment and challenge when we don’t agree. People I never thought I’d ever have the chance to communicate with, even for a small moment. Pretty cool
@jonsthreecents No more ear holing people anymore. That ship is long gone. Guys are throwing too hard and don’t have enough control for chin music to be a part of the game anymore
This sort of thing used to handled in a somewhat civilized manner back in the day. Either that guy his next time around got one in the back, or one of his teammates did. Fully understand why we cannot do that anymore- but the game used to do ok at policing itself
This is the part that’s always hard. Sometimes you have a really good club all year and it seems like it all ends in a screeching halt before you were ready for it to be over.
@mstamant281 It does- unfortunately there’s too many people involved in the game now who don’t know how do handle it the way it should be handled and would lead to far bigger issues
Love this. Something they’ll never forget. Coach kid life is hard. Mom or dad isn’t around a lot. Other times it’s awesome. Get to do things other kids don’t get to do.

Louisiana head coach Matt Deggs invited up his two daughters to join him for his final press conference of the season after being eliminated in the Starkville Regional:
