This idea changed my life forever.
In college I went from getting benched at the end of my sophomore season & starting 3rd on the depth chart the next spring, to an All-American and eventual 1st-round pick… all because of this one idea.
I poured over film trying to figure out why I wasn’t playing well. That’s when it hit me: every single problem traced back to second guessing and indecision.
So I made a commitment, I would make “instant decisions” on the field with zero regard for the outcome.
After just 3 practices, I won my starting job back. It wasn’t until I made that commitment that the game slowed down. The rest is history.
Been at ESPN a long time - this one was an all timer. Before social media, it was as viral as a story can be. I watched it on a tape in the news room. I couldn’t stop watching his teammates.
As an AD, I’ve learned most parents believe sports teach accountability along with many other lessons. That belief sometimes changes when the accountability affects their own child directly.
As an AD, I implemented a strength program where every athlete lifts in season with their current team. I challenged coaches to scientifically prove it was not beneficial. No one could.
It eliminated the tug of war over athletes and reinforced what we believe.
High school football coaches might have the most important job in any community and it’s overlooked. They set the culture for the largest group of young men in a school. If they build good men, not just wins, that ripple hits families, schools, and the whole community.
Tom Brady explains his mental edge and why practice (not gameday) creates separation.
"There was a part of me that was a psychopath out there. I was extremely hypercompetitive every day. I didn't feel like let's get to Sunday and now it's the time...Every day is the time to give your best, even in practice."
Every day your standards are either reinforced or lowered by how you treat practice.
You don’t flip a switch into excellence. You rehearse it daily.

Dear young athletes- keep this photo saved to your phone and show the next person who says you have to focus on one sport in HS.
The amount of kids I’ve heard say “I can’t risk getting hurt” or “my coach won’t let me” drives me crazy.
You get one shot to be a HS athlete.

It’s that time of year when young football players can either get better or make excuses.
Go compete. Lift with your teammates, play basketball, wrestle, play hockey, just do something! Don’t make the mistake of not taking advantage of the opportunities in front of you!
