Today's brief is one I have been waiting to write since Mojtaba Khamenei posted to X on May 26. I have not seen any major American outlet present what happened that week side-by-side — and what happened that week matters.
On May 25, President Trump posted on Truth Social that the leaders of Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Egypt, Jordan, and Bahrain should "simultaneously" sign onto the Abraham Accords as a precondition for any peace settlement with Iran.
One day later, on May 26, the sitting Supreme Leader of Iran — Mojtaba Khamenei, who succeeded his father after Ali Khamenei was killed in the joint U.S.-Israel strikes on February 28 — issued his own call to "all Islamic countries and governments" to join a "New Islamic Civilization."
Two calls. Same capitals. Twenty-four hours apart. Both heads of state. Both proposing a complete reordering of the Middle East. Both telling the same Gulf and Arab capitals to pick a side.
