I have to imagine this was based on picking someone who is a true leader in and around this team. At this level it is imperative.
On the grass roots and competitive youth level I did a write-up on my thoughts on soccer team captains.

Coach - the game is longer than you think.
Find your authentic self at stick to it. Be a quality man or woman every moment that you have the privilege to be a coach.
👌
@Coach_Beckmann Are you one of those guys upset that a star player is getting a 500k NIL but silent about the below average head coach making 5 million?
Couldn't have said it better myself! So important to emphasize these moments. These are the times they're really going to remember and honestly, I think these are the moments when they might just decide how much they truly love this game. 🙏
Youth Football/Soccer Coaches, Don’t forget the little moments⚽️👇🏼
Cherish the laughs during water breaks, the high-fives after a great pass, the celebration dances after a goal and the quiet chats when a player needs a boost. These moments build bonds and love for the game! ❤️
I'm fan of yours, my friend, but if I may -- In all my years of being involved in the sport and with coaching across the age groups, I've started to 100% put this on myself as the coach.
The message absolutely has to come from me to help parents understand my expectations and what the reasons are. However, U7--that's an environment with many younger parents.
Honestly, maybe I have grown soft, but I have started believing that [for the older ages] most of the teaching occurs during the week. My players have come to expect that I believe that they should know what to do without me barking at them during a match. They also know to ignore the parents.
Lol!
🚨 Giggs:
“Rio once told me, ‘Watch his left hand, not his foot.’ That’s how Becks bent a ball to his will. One swing, ball had no choice. The foot was just the trigger. Some players learn the game… others make the game learn them. Beckham was that guy”
