It's an awful American word that is incorrectly used in the UK and has no place in British English anyway.
If the @BBC are using the word they should be ashamed of themselves.

Why and how did the English change it to 'lartay'?
These questions are hypothetical of course, everyone knows how rubbish the English are at foreign languages.
