Mexico is changing its approach with Chinese automakers in a big way.
The U.S. has been putting massive pressure on Mexico and attempting to close loopholes that could be exploited by Chinese car brands.
Because of this, Reuters reports that Mexico is stopping incentives for these automakers.
But check this out - at a meeting in January, Mexican officials decided something important.
They announced that low-cost public land and tax cuts for electric vehicle production are no longer available.
A crucial decision that is meant to protect U.S. interests.
The goal?
To stop Chinese firms from using Mexico as a backdoor into the U.S. market by avoiding the high 27.5% tariffs.
Right now, if a product is made in Mexico using Chinese parts, it only faces a 2.5% duty as part of the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement, also known as USMCA.
And currently, there are about 20 Chinese auto brands are in Mexico…
However, *none* have set up manufacturing facilities there.
The bottom line is this:
Mexican officials see the benefits of Chinese investments but they are careful not to upset the U.S., especially as their trade agreement review in 2026 approaches.
I’m keeping a close eye on this developing story and will keep you posted.
When Rick Barnes was unceremoniously dumped by @TexasLonghorns, he was immediately offered & accepted @Vol_Hoops job. Before it was announced, he had a final farewell press conference in Austin. A writer asked him “Will you coach again?” Rick responded with a smile, “Sooner than you think.” They had press conference in Knoxville the next day. @SEC Champs tonight.
Congratulations to freshman midfielder Quinn Huber, who scored his first career collegiate goal during our 9-8 overtime victory at Robert Morris on Saturday!
