@SFHShoops IQ… all of the other stuff is correct but they lack IQ… understanding the game and feel behind it. Coaches run too many sets and continuity type offenses at the lower level because they want to win & parents…so they come in as robots
@Shawnzy42 Hmmmm… there’s other important things you can say… I think you can SHOW love unconditionally… because it’s easy to say I love you… but it’s hard to consistently show it…
Defense is not a skill… it’s energy and effort! If defense is that important to coaches… why don’t they work individual defensive skills in the off-season!? Never seen a kid go to a skill developer to get better at defense during the off-season.
What I think is interesting is how much time coaches spend on defense! At all levels! Tbh teach kids how to play the game, make reads, be a teammate. Coaches would you rather take a so so defender but an elite offensive team player? Or a so so offensive guy that can defender?
A lot of people say defense wins championships…I would like to disagree. It gives you a chance to win a championship. At the end of the day offense wins championships! So lets teach players how to play offense instead of patterns. Teach them spacing! Advantages! Teach the game!
Being a coach for over a decade..I always saw kids with trainers & working skills..that’s coo. non of that matters if that kid doesn’t produce in the game. So trainers.. teach the game, desicion making w/the skill. Stop separating the two. They’re one in the same! Study the game
Watching youth basketball we are doing a disservice to these players by teaching them sets & continuity offenses! Teach them the game- allow them to self discover. Stop worrying about a trophy that doesn’t matter long term. Messy is the best learning.
