In essence I agree with Jamie that man-to-man negates a lot of positional advantages. Although I see a clear and viable solution within the positional framework.

Man-to-man itself is a rigid orientation and a reduction of defensive references; a zonal approach primarily works with 3 references: space, teammate, and the opponent. A man-to-man approach only works with 1 reference, the specific opponent assigned. This, together with the fact that the defensive team is always reacting to the opponent, shows a clear path to exploit a man-to-man approach.

Automatisms (Conte)—If you know exactly how the opponent will react, which you do against a man-to-man approach, you can set up predefined automatisms and train them explicitly.

Dynamic occupation of space, vacate to arrive with counter movements (Inzaghi/De Zerbi)—Since the opponent follows you everywhere, you can create “future space” to arrive in through counter movements. 3rd/4th man runs and up-back-throughs.

The positional structure still remains paramount to execute these concepts; you still need to “stretch” the pitch vertically and horizontally to create dynamic arrivals in open spaces and not congested spaces.

It is no surprise that Gasperini, the most prominent man-to-man coach, has a poor record against Conte and Inzaghi.
