Love coaching wrestling. Love helping our young men reach lofty goals on and off the mat. Love watching them give back to the community through meaningful causes! #HawksRising https://t.co/pzfSvqhsdu
A Fan Yelling “your career is over” To Jordan Burroughs, A Man Who Carried USA Wrestling On His Back For A Decade, Is Probably The Most Disrespectful Thing I’ve Ever Watched.
Who knew that "building Champions on the mat AND in life" would become my way of life?! Loved every minute of it! I'll always be a Panther! #PantherTough
Edgemont... you've been my coaching home for 21 years... And my home-home for a lot longer than that. So VERY grateful for the opportunities, challenges and successes. Even more grateful for the relationships.
There’s a *very* thin line between excuses and explanations.
Whenever we fail to meet a goal or live up to a standard, it’s important to take a minute to figure out why. That kind of reflection is how we grow and get better. It’s how champions become champions. ⬇️
The only way to truly grow from our shortfalls is to own them. Evaluate what we could have done differently or better. Formulate a plan to address it. Execute.
Excuses take the onus off you. It’s the easy way out. ⬇️
The best programs find ways to create a culture where kids feel accepted for who they are, but are also pushed to become better versions of themselves every single day.
The coaches that find that balance are the ones who find the most success for their teams and their athletes!
“Fitting in” implies you are conforming to the environment around you.
Championship cultures need to balance BOTH of these!
Creating an environment where kids feel accepted & can make a positive contribution to the team’s goals makes a huge difference in a program’s culture. ⬇️
At first glance, it’s easy to think these two terms mean the same thing. When you really think about it, though, they’re actually opposites:
“Belonging” implies that you feel comfortable, safe and can be your authentic self, as you are. ⬇️
Coaching is all about balance!
There are dozens of things a coach needs to balance to build a successful program.
A lot of that has to do with the culture you create. A perfect example is “fitting in” and “belonging”.
They're not the same thing! ⬇️
A strong culture does something else, too: It makes it almost impossible for those who don’t buy-in to stay. And almost always, they let themselves off the bus, so you don’t have to.
Want “the right” people in your program? Start by building “the right” culture!
When you hear coaches talk about building a program, you often hear about "getting the right people on the bus".
Easiest way to do that?
Start by focusing on your culture. ⬇️
And THAT is the key to “getting the right people on the bus”!
A strong, positive culture attracts the kind of people that fit. It draws them in like gravity. ⬇️
