Summer Book #1: “…[I]f we live in fear and never try, if we never attempt something scary or daunting, we can’t know what limits we possess. If we don’t push ourselves, the only limits we face are the ones we place on ourselves, the ones we fabricate in our minds.”
“We are looking for a balance: passion for work that makes it a calling, but without tipping into workaholism that extinguishes the sense of meaning and simply fuels an addiction to worldly success.” @arthurbrooks
“Achieving success of any kind in life demands resilience. Like physical fitness, this kind of mental fitness cannot be purchased in a bottle but must be developed through consistent effort over an extended period of time.” @IronCowboyJames
This is great leadership from Pete Crow-Armstrong! PCA hit a clutch triple and then tied the game on a sac fly.
On the sac fly, he didn’t slide because Matt Shaw didn’t tell him to. After the play, PCA made sure to let Shaw know what he did wrong and the Cubs went onto win the game 👀
“With the self-esteem movement, we flipped the script, trying to give self-esteem without the accompanying action and work to validate it. Even worse, we shifted the focus away from the joy of actually doing the work and toward external praise and rewards.” @stevemagness
“The trouble is, we don’t exercise [courage, fortitude, and endurance] because we don’t appreciate them. Show me one person who cares how they act, someone for whom success is less important than the manner in which it is achieved.”
“For the only safe harbor in this life’s tossing, troubled sea is to refuse to be bothered about what the future will bring and to stand ready and confident, squaring the breast to take without skulking or flinching whatever fortune hurls at us.”
“…[B]ut if it is of such a nature that it requires you to be the agent of injustice to another, then, I say, break the law. Let your life be a counter friction to stop the machine.”
