If you had asked me as a child, I would have told you I would retire playing in the NFL. God had different plans. He knew this was only a pit stop, preparing me for my true purpose: to impact lives through coaching.
It is greater than the game.

Couldn’t be more proud of the way our athletes and coaches answered the call in 12 short spring practices. It’s time to keep pouring it ON!!! The Summer is OURS! #NorthStar#AlwaysCompete
@CoachNiklos Facts but you don’t always have a WR when training. I can’t speak for everyone but everything I do transfers over to the field. Work speaks for itself but respect your opinion!
“Fundamentals Before Scheme” Press Man Technique
Press man is one of my favorite techniques, but you have to be technically sound to execute it at a high level. From a cornerback’s perspective, when covering the outside wide receiver,
I always emphasize the following:
Alignment:
We split the wide receiver’s crouch, aligning slightly inside.
Area of Focus: Our eyes are locked in on the wide receiver’s waist down.
I stress “feet first.” We play with our feet first, and then we bring our hands into play. I make my DBs take motor mirror steps to develop active feet. Once our feet match the wide receiver’s footwork, we then bring our hands into play.
In the drills below, you will see eye discipline, active feet, motor mirror technique, and finally, the use of hands.

Fundamentals Before Scheme – Crossover Run
Once the WR breaks our cushion (steps on our toes), we transition into a crossover run. This is where technique and discipline take over.
Primary area of focus is the WR waist on down. The hips don’t lie—key the lower body to stay grounded and avoid getting lost in upper-body movement.
Maintain your distance. In the WR’s mind, if they’re even, they’re leaving—so we cannot afford to be flat-footed or out of phase. Stay in control of the leverage and match their speed with urgency.
You’ll see some DBs shoot that off hand to the WR’s shoulder. When they’re in trouble or dealing with a speed guy, they’re taught to shoot that hand to the near shoulder. This helps them stay on top of the route and remain in phase without panicking or overextending.
Everything ties back to fundamentals—eyes disciplined, feet efficient, and hands intentional.

Fundamentals Before Scheme!
Day 1 drill that translates over to the field teaching my players how to properly come out of their breaks.
Stress detailed:
Eyes: locked in on WR waist down.
Feet: Explosion out your breaks.
T-Step: Allows the DB to break in any direction

@ChazHill22 Good question! I give them a landmark which is the hashes. Eyes stay down simulating the WR’s waist on down. I give them a 6 count. On the 6 step, everyone should be breaking downhill. I pause in between so they can maintain their balance.
Coaches, let me give you some advice.
If you’re going to a 3–4 scheme and your base coverage is Quarters (Cover 4), you better have a hell of a defensive backs coach who can teach detailed fundamentals.
Quarters eventually turns into zero man—you’re not playing with a true free safety.
That’s why I preach: “Fundamentals Before Scheme.”
We play in one of the toughest districts in Texas—formerly 23-6A, now 17-6A after realignment.
As the Co-Defensive Coordinator at Kingwood High School, and the only defensive backs coach on staff, I made it a point to prepare my guys to play zero man. We weren’t perfect, but in my two years at Kingwood, our DBs have finished at the top of the district in interceptions and pass breakups both seasons.
We led the district with 17 interceptions in the 2024–25 season. In the 2025-26 season we repeated what we did the previous year.
For the first time at Kingwood in this district, Jonathan Ankutse earned 1st Team All-District at corner, and I’ve got two corners heading to college 🫡
