Great teams don’t make excuses. They make adjustments.
No…
“Yeah, but the refs…” “Yeah, but they’re more talented…” “Yeah, but we were tired…”
Accountability starts when the excuses stop.
“Preparation to win is much more important than the will to win. But if you combine the preparation to win and the will to win, I get chills thinking about it.”
Coach K 🔥
Everyone wants to win. Few are willing to prepare to win.

Nick Saban - Rip/Liz Match
- 1 High Man Match Cover 3 (Strong Rotation) or Cover 6 (Weak Rotation)
Corners
- Responsible for #1 unless short or under within the first 5 yards.
- If #1 is short within the first 5 yards, CB gives a smash call to the curl flat player & matches #2 vertical.
Flat Defenders
- If your man is vertical in the seam, then you match him.
- If your man goes under, make an under call and zone off to the curl flat.
- Come off #2 vertical and match #1 short if you get a smash call from the corner.
- Come off #2 vertical versus a fast #3. "We're playing zone versus a fast 3."
Hook Defenders
- Must take #3 thru unless given an under call.
- Saban started running Rip/Liz after 1994 in order to deal with the vertical seams + out route combinations vs 3 Deep Zone (lost 3 games to the Pittsburgh Steelers).
A Strong Take:
Kids need truth tellers.
Raise them to be resilient, not fragile.
1. Sports are hard.
2. School is hard.
3. Life is hard.
But every time parents jump in to rescue…
Every time they blame the coach, the teacher, or the ref…
Every time they make excuses for their kid…
They rob their kids of the very things that build strength:
Adversity. Accountability. Growth.
Kids don’t need the world to be fair.
They need to learn how to respond when it’s not.
Let’s stop protecting them from the hard.
And start preparing them for it.
Remarkable to think Girls Flag Football was not a sanctioned high school sport in New York just four years ago. Today, more than 5,500 student-athletes from 225 @NYSPHSAA schools participate. When students are engaged, the benefits extend to their schools and communities. Expanding participation remains a top priority for @NYSPHSAA.
