As we enter November, it's time to give thanks for the wonderful coaches who provided us with impactful youth sporting experiences. Take a moment this month to express your thanks for a current/former coach who has had an impact on your/your child's life.

Fall coaches, when your season ends, it's time to do your postseason evaluation. It's an opportunity for you to evaluate your coaching performance and reflect on your areas of strengths and weaknesses.ย It's the final step to completing your coaching duties for the season.ย (1/3)
If your organization does not require a formal postseason evaluation (which most do not), check out my postseason evaluation in chapter 8 of my book (link below). It guides you through 18 questions about all aspects of coaching. Your honest reflection and feedback to these (2/3)
If you want to set yourself and your team up for success this year, check out chapter 4 of my book "Beyond the Skills and Drills: The Keys to Successfully Coaching Youth Sports" to see my entire preseason checklist.ย You can find my book on Amazon - https://t.co/bHpti79WEI (3/3)
Winter Coaches, your season will be starting soon and now is the time to start preparing!ย There is plenty to do before you even step foot on the court or field with your players.ย (1/3)
๐น Have you contacted your families to let them know you are the coach?
๐น Have you confirmed that the equipment you have is in safe and in working order?
๐น Have you read the rule book?
๐น And so much more! (2/3)
Parents, your child wants to look to the sideline and see you there. Your presence is the best gift you can give. Remember, if you say anything from the sideline, keep it positive! Win or lose, cheer on your child's hard work and effort!ย It will put a smile on their faces ๐
Coaches, when one of your players excitedly asks "Do you get to coach us again next year?" that's when you know you are doing it right!ย It's a huge compliment to you and something all coaches should be striving for.ย

If you plan practices that keep your athletes engaged throughout, they will be too busy to get into trouble!
Avoid long lines during drills. Put small group stations into place. Keep your players working during practice and your discipline issues will decrease substantially!
Discipline is an area that makes most coaches uncomfortable and something they want to avoid addressing at all costs. The good news is YOU, as the coach, can minimize discipline issues simply by being ORGANIZED.

๐น Have a huddle at the end of eachpractice and include the parents. Discuss the next practice or game and answer any questions.ย
๐น Send emails or texts about changes that are time sensitive.ย
๐น Keep the doors of communication open
#coachingcoaches
Coaches, how you communicate with the parents can help set the tone for your program and make the parents feel valued and included.
Depending on the age of your team, you may be able to have direct communication with the players but also give the parents the information too.
Sure, you will have kids on your team who are naturally competitive and want to win. But you need to recognize and appreciate that most youth sports athletes simply want to have FUN. Always keep FUN as the focus!
Remember kids play sports because it is fun!ย This quote that I heard just this week proves the point. And the ironic part is that this athlete's team DOES keep score. It's just clearly not the focus. Huge kudos to the coach for that!

I always say, if you're going to speak from the sidelines, it MUST be positive!ย It takes a proactiveย effort to be an encouraging fan.ย I will bet that your child, their coach, the officials,ย and the other parents will appreciate you respecting your role as a parent and fan (2/2)
Parents, this weekend, challenge yourself to NOT coach from the sidelines!ย This may be tougher on some parents than others, but your role as a youth sports parent is to support:
๐น Your child
๐น Their coach
๐น The officials
