Another Christian institution facing difficult realities in higher education.
Preserving Christian higher ed will require both mission conviction and operational discipline. We need strong, steward-minded leaders willing to make strategic but difficult decisions before crisis forces them instead.
How does Christian higher education fit into this conversation?
It’s not immune.
Declining enrollment, rising costs, and unsustainable models are real dangers across all of higher ed. This should be a wakeup call for Christian institutions as well. Difficult decisions surrounding finances, academic programs, athletics, staffing, enrollment strategy, and long-term sustainability will continue to grow.
The danger for Christian institutions is either becoming purely corporate and losing mission, or refusing operational reality in the name of mission. The schools that survive will likely be the ones that hold both together well: strong mission clarity with disciplined operational leadership.
Clemson is $1.5B in debt. Syracuse is closing or pausing 93 programs, UNC-Chapel Hill plans to cut spending by $89M over 3 years. Duke recently let 600 employees go in a $350M budget cut. Indiana public colleges announced a plan to eliminate or merge 580 programs statewide.

@BechlerSearch@recruitwithdan Hiring is one of the few decisions that compounds.
Right person = alignment, trust, and momentum.
Wrong person = hidden costs across enrollment, culture, and credibility.
That’s not just a coaching miss, it’s a stewardship failure. It’s all about stewarding what we have.
Recruiting Myths vs. Reality ⬇️
Myth: D3 is a “safety” option when D1/D2 fall through
Reality: Many talented athletes choose D3 for better fit & stronger academics
Myth: No athletic scholarships = you’ll pay more
Reality: +80% of D3 athletes get non-athletic aid. Run the numbers before you rule out D3
Myth: Coaches will reach out if you’re good enough
Reality: Transfer portal pressure means D3 rosters fill faster w/ proactive recruits
Myth: Virtual recruiting was just a COVID thing
Reality: Personalized emails + short highlight videos still win, bc D3 coaches are busier than ever
