Yesterday, on behalf of the @Our_DA I tabled a motion in the National Assembly calling for the reclassification of farm attacks as priority crimes.

These crimes are not just acts of violence, they are often disproportionately brutal and increasingly leave rural communities defenceless due to (amongst other things):

• Chronic under-resourcing of rural police stations
• Non-existent proactive rural safety strategies
• Weak intelligence and investigative capacity
• Political extremism that fuels division and incites further attacks

The motion highlighted that farm attacks:
•Are disproportionately violent, often involving torture;
•Occur in remote areas with slow SAPS response;
•Undermine food security and rural economies;
•Are politicised or even celebrated by extremists, with no consequences.
