This kid texted me seeking some advice. Here is my response.
NOTE: This advice far exceeds the game of basketball... and can be applied by anyone in any industry looking to advance in their profession!
The club world isn’t the AAU we grew up in anymore. Everybody’s trying to make a dollar off kids and families — hotels, memberships, gate fees, livestreams, recruiting packages. It’s become a business, not about the kids, development, or the game itself.
It should be criminal what @NikeGirlsEYBL charges college coaches for their events. 💸
The costs keep going up and up, yet the teams play on non-wood courts that in Phoenix literally were falling apart and needed to be sledgehammered together between games.
College coaches are lucky to get a bottle of water and a granola bar at EYBL events, while @UANextGHoops and @3SSBGCircuit feed their coaches full meals and charge half the price.
EYBL is also the only shoe circuit who does not have their games up on Synergy.
The price gouging by AAU needs to change 🤷♂️

That Final Four had everything—grit, preparation, emotion… and that reminder we all feel as coaches: sometimes it just isn’t your day, no matter how right you do it.
When you watch what @dawnstaley has built at South Carolina Gamecocks women’s basketball, it’s bigger than wins. It’s culture, belief, and consistency at the highest level. That kind of standard doesn’t happen overnight—that’s years of pouring into players, holding the line, and staying true to a vision.
And on the other side, major respect to @CoachCoriClose and UCLA Bruins women’s basketball—that’s a program that’s been built the right way. Tough, connected, resilient. They showed up on the national stage and represented with class and competitiveness.
And how about Colorado showing up? That matters. That visibility, that representation—it speaks to the growth of the game and the work being done across our state. Those moments inspire the next wave.
At the end of the day, this is why we coach:
•To prepare relentlessly
•To compete with everything we’ve got
•And to accept the outcome with humility when it doesn’t go our way
Because the game always teaches.
What a show. What a stage. And what a reminder of how special this game is. Congratulations @UCLAWBB #copreps #NCAA #nationalchampionship
What’s your legacy as a coach?
Wins, league titles, playoff runs, awards… they come and go.
If that’s all it is, it fades.
Most people couldn’t tell you my record—and I’m good with that.
But they know I’ll show up for their kids.
No one cares what you know until they know how much you care.
For me, it’s about helping them get to the next level in life.
That’s the legacy I’m chasing.

If you’re going to coach women’s sports, know the history you’re standing on—and respect it. This game was built by those who fought for opportunity, not attention. It wasn’t created for ego or stat sheets, but to open doors for young women. Wins and records will come and go, but the real legacy is how you impact the young women you’re entrusted to lead. Don’t lose sight of that in the pursuit of recognition—because it’s never been about us. #NeverStopRising #Iget2 @colocgs . .

Today 12 teams will walk away with a state title. 🏀
But this season belongs to so many more — the hundreds of schools who battled, the thousands of student-athletes who competed, the officials, coaches, administrators, and parents who make high school sports possible every day.
Whether you cut down nets, fought through the playoffs, or simply showed up and got better — you won something that lasts longer than a trophy: growth, resilience, and lessons for life.
Congrats on a great season. #copreps
