Youth coaches, remember the biggest, strongest, fastest athletes in 4-6th grade are not always the biggest, strongest , fastest in 10-12th grade. Keep working and teaching all the ones that want to learn and play. You might be amazed at who they become. https://t.co/JJtBwoSY8k
Young athletes can’t play sports with a piano on their back. And that’s what it feels like when adults (parents/coaches) react to every little move on the field like tomorrow depended on it. Challenge them yes, but believe in them. Their confidence will grow. It works wonders…
Impossible in my view to compare eras. However, I do believe that if Gretzky grew up today he would still be far and away the best player. Would have grown up with modern training and equipment tech. Would be dominant force!
@kyledubas when will you insert someone into the lineup to protect Matthews, Tavares, Marner, etc... Wait for 1 more injury errrrr?? #leafs#dubas#softies
Heard a parent at the rink this wk tell her son “who cares what the coaches say, do what your father has told you”. He must’ve been about 10. Even if you’re an ex-pro, or high level Coach yourself... NEVER is it ‘ok’ to tell a kid not to do EXACTYLY as you’re told in sport. 🙄
Is it our job as strength coaches to prepare the athlete for their next set/next competition, or rather prepare them for the rest of their life? Most would agree it’s the latter. So what’s with all of the theatrical motivational tactics? Focus on education not entertainment.
The art of coaching isn’t a catch phrase- it’s defined by one’s ability to recognize, analyze and adapt to variables that can impact performance- as well as the ability to connect and communicate effectively.
So many kids quit sports- not because they aren’t “mentally tough” enough but because adults make it hard for them to keep loving their sport. Undue pressure. Constant yelling. Blaming. Overzealous parents. So challenge kids, yes, but believe in them. Build them up. They’ll stay.
This is a very sad story that all youth talent development coaches should read. We must be very careful and not take anything for granted. They are supreme athletes, but they are still children
Ellie Soutter death: Father criticises pressure on athletes - https://t.co/JyTh597ju3
After showing a player a tweak to his shot and it worked, he said “woah why didnt you show me this last summer”. I replied “I didnt know it then”. Point in sharing is players forget coaches are doing same as them. Developing, learning, refining. We dont inately know more than you
When adults in youth sports are so focussed on “winning” that kids are subjected to constant yelling from the sidelines while trying to make decisions on the field and mistakes are routinely criticized, no surprise confidence is lost, fun gone= kids leaving sport they once loved.
KEY ADVANTAGES OF CROSS ICE HOCKEY
There’s no replacement for the natural progression of a young player who’s allowed to just play.
